Curious about this. Not just focal length, but I"d be interested in hearing the specific prime lens you use the most, and why so.

If I feel "prime", I use the 85L and sig35A pairing a lot.

I don't use primes for events. My go-to event lens is the 17-55mm f/2.8 IS on a 7D.

This, except its a 24-105 on a 5D3. For me, primes are for situations where I have more time and/or missing a shot isn't that big of a deal.

135L for me if I have the space. 24-70 on the 1D3 and the 135 on the 5D3 seems to work for me. If I don't have the space, I'll throw the Sigma 50 on the 5D3 instead for shallow DOF.

My 100/2 because I'm usually assigned to do the candids and portraits in our team.

Are there any event photographers that shoot almost exclusively primes? If so, I'm curious to hear your thoughts on what it's like. I'm looking to eventually go with a 16-35mm f/4/50L/85L/135L combo.

Heya,

650D with 11-16mm F2.8 II -or- 85mm F1.8 & EOS-M with 22mm F2. Small, effective kit, swap between the two with Joby straps.

Very best,

We use primes less than 1% of the time for our event photography. 98% 70-200/2.8 II, 1% 24-70/2.8 I, <1% various primes including 300/2.8 I, 500/4 I. Last event I shot with a prime was Maple Flag two years ago with the 500/4.

Never used the 50/1.4, 85/1.2 or 135/2 for events yet. Focal length simply not versatile enough and with good zoom glass, the image quality is more than adequate.

I mostly use 24-105 and occasionally the 17-40 and always have them in the bag. For a prime 50mm and 40mm are taken out towards the end of the shoot.

For quite a long time the 35L was my go to lens, but I switched to a 35A and I'm happy with the results. However, this wedding season the 50A has seen a lot of time on my camera, more than any other lens.

I own 24/35/50/85/135 primes, but I tend to carry prime sets of three, and leave the other two primes in a separate bag that I can go to when I need them. I've kind of gone from the 35/85/135 as my default carry set to 24/50/135. Obviously, there are no set rules, and I switch things up as I need to, but these are my general tendencies.

ETA: Specifically, that's the following list, with the 50A being my main go to this summer:
24L II
S35A
S50A
85 f/1.8
135L
