Well done. Great detail.!!

Good for you Al, the wait was worth it. I've found the same thing about the shutter sound...doesn't bother them a bit as long as nothing moves.

Awesome Al and congrats.

Wow great shots is right. All I ever get is tail feathers and I swear its a laugh as they fly off.

Well that worked out well Allan! Very nice indeed.

Wow gorgeous shots! Most of the birds around here do not mind the shutter noise either. Sudden movement tends to spook them.

awesome shots! cool that you could get so close.

Well done Allan, beautiful shots.

Outstanding shots Allen! The shutter sound many times gets some nice poses and attitude. As a side note, this guy is gal. :-)

Thank you all very kindly. It's always a treat when I can get a close-up of this distinctive species. And thanks for the comment on gender, Steve, Not having the full second belly band threw me and, in fact, it looks like the illustration of a juvenile in Sibley.

It's a very young bird for sure but the band is starting to form. The young males have rust mixed in with their primary band and any rust below that would be in the form of spots. and not band-like. Your bird has a solid rust with points indicating the beginning of the band forming. I wouldn't bet the farm on it but it sure looks like a female to me.

I believe they are everyone's nemesis! A long lens is not the only solution; I highly recommend a blind. Thanks for commenting and good luck.

Congrats on nabbing some neat captures of your nemesis Al!
The soft directional lighting adds a sweet touch too. Since this is a young bird maybe you can train her to pose??? :)

Ha! My experience with training females is dismal at best. LOL
Thanks for commenting, Steve.
