ANOTHER (maybe different) Wide Angle Question!

Greetings all.

Forgive me for returning to a question that has been covered many times before, but this one may/may not have a slightly different flavor.

I have a G6 and the wonderful Lensmate converters. My wide converter, The Raynox 6600, which I chose for it's lack of Barrel distortion, is very soft in the corners. If you back off on the zoom a bit, the corners sharpen up quite a bit.

I'm considering purchasing the Canon WC-DC58N. The Canon converter is much sharper in the corners, but displays much more Barrel distortion. The Barrel distortion can be corrected in PS CS2, but after the correction the image must be cropped to give it straight edges.

After the cropping, the resulting image is about the same perspective as the "Backed off" Raynox. I've learned that it's much easier to correct the Barrel distortion, than the corner softness. Either way, I end up at 28 or 29-mm, when I was striving for 24.

Any opinions would be appreciated.

Stick with the Raynox, or go with the Canon?

Thanks, Jeff.

Why spend more money and give yourself more work.
I would leave things as they are and back off that bit.
you can then spend your money when a better 24mm comes along.
They mention this problem on the lensmate site.

Could you post a sample of your Raynox with soft edges at 24mm?

One of the reasons I still use film is I have a f2 24mm lens, I'm wondering how soft the corners are and whether I could live with them...

Thanks,

Here's a link for those that wanted to see the Raynox's softness at wide settings.

I believe I will do as Terry recommends--stay with the paid for Raynox, and wait for someone to build a better converter.

Maybe I'll save the money for a ring-light!

I'm not one for 100% crop comparisons but that softness is too obvious.

What aperature are you shooting these at? Have you tried stopping down to f/5.6 and smaller to f/8?

The image does sharpen up a bit when stopped down, but not a whole lot. Lensmate has similar examples on their site. I'm not really blaming Raynox, they did an amazing job making the lens free from distortions, it's just soft at the edges when used "ultra" wide.

At this price point, there's bound to be compromises. I guess I wanted it all-for really cheap!

Another way round the problem with wide lens attachments is not to worry about the distortion in the pictures but deal with it in software .
Look on this site, they will even write a script for your particular lens combination for free, they accept donations of $5. for unlimited use.

PTlens 6.61 is a programme that does what it says on the tin… It gets rid of barrel and pincushion distortions, and can remove chromatic aberration, and vignetting.… ,If they don’t have it on record, they will even work out the necessary calibration for your camera or lens, for free. And how much does all this cost… A minimum donation of $5. Fantastic.

After reading about the demise of the G-Series, I decided, "what the heck," and found a used Canon WC-DC58N at KEH.com. I figured I might as well get one while they're still available. I can sell the Raynox, or put it on my wife's A95.

Thank you to everyone for their input!

While I'm sad to see the G-Series discontinued, I'm glad I have mine!

Jeff
