I'm needing just a quick clarification. It's my understanding that Samyang et al. are all manual lenses. Is that not true? If it is why would a lens be more expensive than an auto equivalent.

I see the 14mm 2.8 $300 vs. Canon 14mm 2.8 $2000 ok that one make sense. But then when you see a 35 50 85 1.8 or 1.4 that's more expensive than a sigma tamron or even Canon version I'm lost. Are they unbelievable sharp? What's going on?

I come here for your expert opinion. Please do not hesitate to critique or edit.

Well, from Samyang, i see only 14mm is the most popular, the other focal lengths i will not look at those, honestly, if i will buy 35mm then Sigma has the one on top of three brands you mentioned, and 85mm also Sigma has one that is very competitive, or i will go with Canon ones, so if that Samyang 85mm is more expensive for example than Sigma or even Canon then simply i will choose Canon or Sigma so i saved money, it is no force to anyone to buy the most expensive item regardless of the brand, if it is worthy then why not, if not then options are open there to go with cheaper.

Yup, mostly because it's use for landscape photography where it's much easier to set up manually: f/8 to f/11, focus at infinite, done.

The quality of the construction and optics also affects the price.

They've had great optics from the beginning...

Then it's your loss. Their 35mm isn't far behind (most would say it equals the L) the Sigma 35/1.4 and it costs less than half if you shop around. Their 85mm most would agree is just as good as the Sigma and can be had for $250 or less. Then the 24mm has recently gained some steam since it's been tested to show less coma than the 24Lii and it's about as sharp. Samyang is nothing to shake a stick at, for those who are patient enough to use MF they offer some of the best values in the market.

About 35mm, well, in the past i listed Canon one in wish list, then when Sigma produced thier 35 Art i deleted the Canon one, I may think about Samyang, but i am not losing too much going with Sigma, anything less than $1000 is not a big deal, also i bought Sony A7R, then their FE35 now became in my wishlist rather than Sigma Art or Canon or Samyang ones.

actually...

Canon 35mm f2 is now discontinued? but i think it was around the same price if not cheaper than the samyang:

http://www.amazon.com …gle-Cameras/dp/B00009XVCU (external link)

same deal with the canon 24mm 2.8:

http://www.amazon.com …gle-Cameras/dp/B00006I53R (external link)

of course they're not the same apertures, but they are af lenses.

personally, i don't think most of the samyang stuff is a "bargain." some of them are pretty highly regarded, and i have the 14mm myself, but there's a reason why they're so cheap (horrific quality control, extremely cheap construction inside but looks good outside, etc.)... so, for myself, i wouldn't get one unless if the one you're interested in matches or betters the canon equivalent in optics, which apparently the 14mm and 24mm do.

Those ancient arc form drive lenses are discontinued, yes, and for several years running their new prices were ridiculous for what they were.

Not only are they not the same aperture, they don't have similar optics, the Samyang's are better.

I can agree to an extent about quality control, though I don't think they're any worse than Sigma. Not sure what you're talking about for cheap interiors... they're made with some pretty high quality glass elements. Oh, and their 35mm and 85mm both match or better the Canon equivalent also, so I'm not sure what your point is. They also have several lenses nobody else offers (16mm f2, 10mm f2.8, 8mm f3.5) which are all very strong performers.

I was not comparing which brand is better. the thread is about why Samyang is missing af, which the op assumed would cost $, and still is not that cheap.

but....

1. quality control is ridiculous. just check the last big thread on the 14mm for $270. people have returned 3+ lenses of the same kind (I returned 2 before getting 1 good one.) and even the ones they kept had build problems that did not affect optics, so they kept the lenses.

2. google about various articles on taking these things apart. they are built very cheaply. the glass might be the only thing "high-quality" about these, but I guess that counts the most.

3. as for your 35mm, 85mm comment... I had no point about those. not sure what your own point is.

4. they have lenses others don't make. true. again, wasn't arguing Samyang vs canon.

5. and.... nothing about what you said, but it is worth noting that even lenses which people say are optically superb compared to canon counterparts, well.... not all of them are. like the 14mm. it has some crazy distortion that even the best profiles cannot completely eliminate (I tried many.) and it vignettes so badly that often, especially after correction, if you try to do HDR or up the shadows enough you will crazy noise/discoloration in the corners. just tradeoffs--you get sharpness at a cost. but yes, it's very sharp.

was just trying to answer the op's question. so to clarify what I wanted to say: yes, AF is expensive to engineer and produce. and yes, in my opinion, Samyang is way overpriced for what it is.
