Hello--I have the opportunity to pick up some local second hand 603s to possibly replace my 602s, but I noticed that these are referred to as the 'Nikon' variety. As far as I know the only difference between these and the Canon version is the shutter release cable. Is this correct ?

I also noticed there is what I'm guessing is a hot shoe on the transiever itself. Will this pass on ETTL information to a canon flash sitting on it ? Or will I continue to have to use a sync cable if I want another flash on the hotshoe of my 5d ?

Thanks !

I'd go for a Canon set--the pin arrangement on the foot of the unit is different between Nikon and Canon versions. This is a picture of the MkI 603s, but it's the same for the MkIIs:

You will not have wake-up capability if you use the Nikon version. Not sure whether the hotshoe on top is full TTL passthrough or manual-only passthrough, though. But yes, you can stack a flash on top of it, and fire it with the triggers.

I'm a woman. I shoot with a Fuji X100T, Panasonic GX-7, Canon 5DmkII, and 50D. flickr stream (external link)

The RF-603 in either Nikon or Canon flavors will not pass ETTL information through the top hotshoe. The RF-603II version has a functional pass through hotshoe but it is Manual Only. See full writeup here: http://flashhavoc.com/yongnuo-rf-603-ii-released/ (external link)

If you stick with Yongnuo you will need to go to the YN-622C to get full ETTL passthrough to a top mounted flash. Sticking with manual triggers I believe the Phottix Strato II triggers provide ETTL passthrough, but their cost is compareable to the 622C ETTL triggers from Yongnuo.
