I have disabled the shutter button as a focus and moved it to the af on button. I have also moved the ai servo/one shot button to the dof preview button. While shooting today I went to switch to ai servo and noticed that it stayed on ai servo ONLY if I held it down. As soon as I let go, it went back to one shot. You can see that this would be a pain having to hold down the dof button, click the af on for focus, and then shutter for a picture all at the same time. How do I make the button toggle on and off and not have to hold it down? If this isn't possible, what in the world is a work around?

The work around is to just leave it in Servo all the time. Press and hold the AF-ON button for Servo operation and press and release the AF-ON button for One-Shot-like operation. The only downside is that you get no focus confirmation, you just have to trust the system to work properly. One Shot does work better in low light on stationary targets(and a few other situations), so this would be when you would want to press and hold your DOF button to keep it in One Shot mode.

Okay so how do I keep it in ai servo all the time?

The DOF button is an "hold to toggle mode", ie. if you are in AI Servo, and you hold the DOF down, it goes to One Shot. If you are in One Shot, and you hold the DOF down, you are in AI Servo.

Hit the button for AF Drive, and change your normal setting to AI Servo instead of One Shot.

Or is there a different button that would work as a toggle? Since the dof button is only hold to activate, is there something else that would quickly toggle ai servo and single? Thanks for help so far.

I am not aware of a way to do a press once to toggle, in that situation I would just hit the drive button and set the new value. There might be a way to add this to your "My Menu" and then change your menu to go to "My Menu" each time you access the menu, then change your Set button to be the menu button. This way you would hit Set, and you would be on the AI Servo/One Shot menu item, so just hit Set again to change? That all the suggestion I have.

Could one use (near) duplicate c1/c2/c3 settings, with the only difference being AI Servo vs One Shot mode?

Well if its as simple as pressing the drive button once to switch to ai servo and again to switch back to one shot, then this should solve my problem.

To be honest with you I don't see what the problem is with doing it as you suggested in your first post. You operate the DOF button with one of your left hand fingers, and you press the AF-ON button and the shutter release simultaneously together at the same time with your right hand forefinger and thumb.

I did this at the zoo yesterday and it was very awkward with the large Tamron 150-600 in combination with my already small-ish fingers.

As you have removed AF from the shutter button all you need do if you really want AF confirmation in One Shot is to press and hold the DoF button, BBF with the back button, which will now give you confirmation. Release both buttons and shoot. After all once One Shot has locked it doesn't refocus anyway. I wouldn't even bother with this though. I would just use AI Servo. Press the back button, when the image is in focus then release and you are good to go. The only thing you loose doing this is the indication of the active AF point on the LCD screen or in DPP.

Not sure about the 6d but 5d3 has a few options to assign that function to. M.fn, dof preview work well. It's in the menu.
