I had no sooner crawled into my blind this morning when this female belted kingfisher flew onto my perch, 25' away. So sensitive are they to movement that I was frozen in position for 40 minutes, 328 shots, and 57 mosquito bites. It's a good thing mosquito bites don't bother me much, because I just had to let them bite and not take a chance at swatting them. Clearly her reason for alighting where she did was to roost; she looked down in the water occasionally, but never dove at anything.

Thank you very much. I use a 7D with a 500 II. These are all at 1/250 sec. using my shooting port for a lens support, in other words, nor tripod, but a rest.

Is it just me Al, or do you have more than one Kingfisher over these 1st three threads?
Not that it really matters because you certainly have marvelous captures of either it or all of them :)
Love the elegance of the 1st and 3rd poses with gorgeous light falling on them. Not sure how to describe your 2nd image other than it certainly qualifies as unique. I'm betting you're planning on hitting your blind every morning until this streak runs out. I know I would!

Thank you for you kind comments on both threads, Steve. I certainly believe I have an adult male and female and I think a juvi female. In fact, shortly after this female alighted this morning, the male, I assume, flew cackling down the channel right past her, no doubt to fish elsewhere.

My catalog currently contains 275 belted kingfisher shots, the good ones over about four good years of photographing them in these circumstances. I've deleted many hundreds more as I can't keep them all; I feel a twinge of guilt doing so, as I know how folks struggle to get even one good shot of them.

My advice is to observe where they are frequently seen and put up a perch over the water that they can't refuse. Then a blind nearby and a lot of patience and luck. I'm fortunate in that I can check my location several times a day. Location, location, location.....

Wow! Both for the amazing shots, and your tolerance for mosquitoes - I'd have scared off every creature in a 100 yards...

There will be days when you get the shot(s) you missed days, months or years before.

Great shots, but I would have used a bit of bug spray! I usually just spray my clothes...it helps! I also wear a ball cap backwards and spray it too! Again beautifully sharp images!
