Adorama Rovelight RL 600, thoughts?

With the Jinbei stock supplied mount umbrella holder the opening size is 10mm, it is understood that Adorama changed this out and introduced this sizing issue and removed the grip option.

Yea,

It's a bit annoying to have to get different umbrellas now. Sometimes I want a big modifier but don't want the weight of my 48" octa softbox, and just want a super portable large umbrella. Was thinking a 60" umbrella that fit would be ideal.

I had the same problem with my westcott umbrellas. Supposedly the PCB PLM stuff all fits. That is where I plan to go but I'm not in special need of modifiers at this point.

Added a cold shoe to hold a trigger to the unit - simple and easy enough - adding a small patch of 3M Dual Lock to the top and the left hand side gives the flexibility to move the shoe about depending on the head location and setup.

Yours is version 'V'. You are using CellsC II for ?range, reliability and early triggering when required (HS). Presumably you are using the 'V' version of Jinbei's remote trigger for flash power adjustment. How are you finding Jinbei's remote trigger version 'V'? TIA

Great minds think alike I did this exact mod last week (top-mounted Cells II-C) after being fed up with RL's poor TRS remote.

So I have been waiting for this light(bowens mount) to become available and the restock date has been pushed back from the 17th to 20th. I have heard that Jinbei has a updated version of this light with a better trigger. Would I be better off ordering the Jinbei HD 600 V now? Does anyone have this light currently?

While I have not used the Jinbei version, I say go for the Adorama version despite the poor trigger. You get a better swivel mount and Adorama's support in case you need it down the road. In terms of triggering, you will be way better off with a third party trigger anyway (that way you can get HSS too). RL's trigger then can be used in hand for power adjustment (when in close range).

I do have the Jinbei version and couldn't be happier. I am not located in the US, probably if I were I would've gone the Rovelight route.

Personally, I would stick with the Rovelight for one reason. Adorama.

Specifically are you saying that Jinbei have confirmed that they are producing a new trigger for the HD 600 V (only) - beyond the 'TRS-V' (current on Jinbei's site)? (Presumably with HS timing etc.)

Jinbei have moved to a new radio system with the HD 600 V. They asked me not to comment on where its heading with future capabilities, which is fair enough.

They confirmed the current V system is not compatible with the HD 600 II (/Rovelight), though owners of both have confirmed that already.

I suggested the way around the backward compatibility (and current poor transmitter) issue now would be a transmitter with which can operate on both systems. To that I didn't receive any comment.

So you'll have to make of that what you can, though personally I think its fairly unlikely to see a dual transmitter.

Although this in not a good situation, I personally wouldn't really like to see new products hampered by trying to retain backward compatibility if that's going to mean a lot of compromises either. So its hard to argue one way or another without knowing the technical aspects.


As mentioned here a number of times though, the current TRS transmitter have not proven to be particularly good, and anyone buying these lights now should at the least be aware of that.
