Live and learn! Yes I tried to 'save money' but in the end found out that the Rove's crummy transmitter just won't cut it for my work. I've gone to Priolites, their MBX1000 HotSync. Expensive? Yup for sure but they also work in HSS with Pentax cameras. And having the ability to use my 645Z at 1/4000th shutter is a godsend.

Just looked at your site. Really great dance work, nice and clean. Loved the girl standing on her head, so FUN!

My partner who is a filmmaker did a BTS video of the ballet session. You can see the environments in which I was working. Clearly it's not in a studio where radio signals can bounce off walls and ceilings. I had my aerospace electrical engineer pal look at the transmitter's guts and his words, "It's lucky this thing works at all given the internal antenna!" Anyway I'm not going to beat a dead horse. If they work for you FANTASTIC because the light itself is solid. But for my work I have to have a remote to adjust power settings. I initially meter everything, but on the fly I adjust power quite a bit to get the nuances I'm looking for in the image.

So I've returned both Roves and replaced them with Priolite MBX 1000 HotSyncs. Yup they are five times the cost of the Roves, but are well worth the price for my work. Plus they are the only current strobes that work in HSS with the Pentax 645Z which eliminates the need for me to wait until they produce leaf shutter lenses. I actually doubt I'd buy leaf lenses now. In studio I use Einsteins with his CyberCommander sytem. Remarkable lights and a great value. I always laugh when folks poopoo Paul's Einsteins. They have never let me down. And his customer services is the Nordstrom of the camera lighting industry. None better.

Nice video. And agree on Einsteins. I have almost 10 yr old ABs and they still going.

BTW - Question about the Priolite MBX 1000 HotSyncs lights. It says following on their web site:

"he HotSync mode on the flashes providing a long flash duration of around 1/200th (t0.5), being long enough to act as a constant light source while the cameras shutter is open. And therefore generally making it possible to shoot at any shutter speed up to the cameras maximum."

To me this as well as Rovelight is just like a constant burn which folks have been doing with lights like AB1600. I don't see anything different. Maybe these strobes are more controllable and with newer transmitters but being constant burn, I would think they have less of a use as being able to nuke mid day sun using HSS.

Thanks in advance to anyone who can help with my question.

The trigger is SO frustrating sometimes... every time it doesn't trigger I have to turn the strobe off and then back on! How can I reliably trigger it? I am using one 622C.

Reliably? Use 2 622c's. One on camera and one on the flash.

Light meter : which one to buy
Shots I clicked through the setup
5D Mark III , rovelight, 600 EXRT, Yongnuo YNE3-RT transmitter on camera, Yongnou YNE3-RX on rovelight

I was able to hit close to 1/4000 shutter speed. I haven't tested max 1/8000.

Which is the best budget light meter to buy for 5D Mark III, 2 rovelight, 1 flashpoint 1220m and 600 EX-RT setup.

I was looking at L478DR sekonic..restricted to 1/1000 max shutter if I am not wrong by reading it.

I just got the Rovelight. I use 2 622N's, one on camera and one in the rovelight and it syncs to 1/8000th, flawlessly, everytime. I use the supplied transmitter in hand to adjust the power.

Also works great with Phottix Odins - 100% reliable.

How you going to meter when you using long flash duration more like a constant light source?

Yes. Confusing because they have not updated their photos . . .
