Adorama Rovelight RL 600, thoughts?

Had my first issue with the Rovelights. I have two and recently took them to a wedding for the formals. I set up both lights, got them dialed in and started test shots. 3 shots in and one of the Rovelights no longer fires.

The settings are EXACTLY the same on both lights. One fires 100% of the time, the other maybe once in every 30 shots. I use the test button on the remote - nothing. I use the actual test button on the back of the light - nothing. It beeps but doesn't fire. I've tried turning off/on, replacing the battery, switching to a new battery, nothing is working. Everything else on the light functions normally.

Is there a master re-set for these lights? I finished the formals limping on one light and got them back home for further testing. No matter what I did to the malfunctioning light, I cannot get it to fire.

I don't know, but I'd like to know the answer too. On Canon Speedlites, very occasionally you need to do a reset, but the process depends on a hardware 'ON' switch. (Take the batteries out - switch 'ON' - then fully depress the 'pilot' (test) button, etc). But the Rovelight/ Jinbei has a software 'ON' setup - so I imagine working through an equivalent routine would not work.

Please share outcomes/learning, Tx and good luck getting it fixed.

What are you using to trigger? If the included remote is used for trigger are both lights set on channel 15?

I'm using the included remotes along with a pair of Yongnuo 622c's. Both lights are switched to the same channel. They've always worked 100% up until last weekend.

What's curious is that even walking up to the unit and pressing the test button on the back of the light itself will not even trigger the light. Makes me think it's a bulb issue or something.

First Rovelight/PCB 47" attempts. For that matter, first attempt with my home studio. C/C please. Thanks!

your strobe is too high up leaving no catchlights , resulting to hot spots on the T zone, and deep shadows on the neck


Got one unit to test out for the studio I work at this weekend.

Finally got the Rovelight outside for the first time since I recently acquired it. Took some fun shots of my friends riding around. I would have liked to added a second kicker light but as this was Central Washington, rain was coming in pretty quick and sun was setting just as fast.

Settings were around 1/4 power (bare bulb) @ 1/320th HSS w/ YN-622C trigger

^^ Nice one. You don't typically see folks using strobes for these kind of shots.

PhilF - Looking for your review, comments on these lights.

I think I've read every post in this thread over a course of several weeks. I'm interested in getting a larger light source for outdoor shots here in Fl when I can't wait for the best time of day but am kinda concerned about some of the QC issues brought up. Not going to use the included remote triggering as I have the YN622s already but want to hear inputs regarding reliability of the 600b model vs the sister models and other similar portable strobes. I'm willing to pay more for reliability but not sure if I'm willing to pay as much as a Profoto portable yet.

Exactly why I got the Rovelight here in Florida. I got it for a few reasons. As a strobe, it's fantastic, lots of output, portable, battery, HSS, can over power the sun, etc. I also got it because Adorama has good support. They take care of any issue if there is one without question. Buy a great strobe from another company and some have good support, some don't (and you're stranded if something goes wrong).

They're now replacing the transmitter too (free of course).

Mine is still kicking. No regrets.

There frankly isn't another strobe that has this output, this portability, and this wire-free for the price.

Everything else was considerably more.

The other option I was considering at the time in this price range was an AD360. But overall, I knew I needed the 600ws for Florida sun.

Again, no regrets. Great light.

I would suggest you wait for the Interfit S1 and see what it's all about. The remote it comes with can do HSS/TTL just like the Profoto B1

I am still waiting out. Adorama support seems nice but I don't want to send brand new strobes for repairs/replacements or have them die during the shoot. Hoping the quality improves. Also looking forward to new Interfits that PhiF mentioned. They seem to have real HSS though cost more $$.

There are always trade offs for sure. I've had to send back 2 batteries but they've always been great customer service wise. I'm looking forward to the new remote but have been super happy with the Rove. I've done a lot of shooting with it and haven't been disappointed yet.
It's important to remember that it's not unlike any other electronics. There are always failures. I'd venture to guess that although there are reported failures, there are many more perfectly fine units we never hear about because they just work (for the most part).
