I have and use Canon FF cameras as the mains. But I just bought a T3i.

I will be going thru the manual page by page as time allows, but for the short term was wondering if anybody has any suggested settings or links to pages with the same. I searched this forum and did not see any.

The camera will be used for varied applications, but I always shoot manual and raw. Thanks.

Just use as you would a full frame. Field of view and DOF will be different for any given lens, but you'll get used to it.:)

Thanks mark, appreciate the reply. But I am not talking about using the camera but rather recommended settings. Probably mostly in the custom functions - if there are any (haven't turned the camera on yet.)

The thing about the custom functions is that they are there so that each user can setup the camera to suit what they shoot, how they like to shoot it and other personal preferences. You really need to set it up for you, not somebody else who will never use it. I would think a lot of the CFs are similar to the camera you have been using, so just set them up the way you are used to shooting.

Heya,

It's the same as any other full frame camera, except field of view for focal length is a little different.

Setup back-button focus in custom functions. Play around with HD video recording.

Very best,

Yea, probably good advice. I was hoping for a quick start thingie, but I always tell other people the most important thing to do is go thru the manual and know the tools you use well. Guess I'll have to take my own advice.

I know the FF's so thoroughly that I could probably operate them by feel with my eyes closed and by counting clicks. Only way to achieve that proficiency with this camera is to take the time to learn it. Thanks all.

I'd get magic lantern put on it pretty quickly, setup back button focus, and set the "set" button to ISO.

Excellent! Thank you! This is the sort of feedback I was hoping for. I'll look into ML.

Yeah I get tired of the "Do what works for you" as if someone's suggestion is so powerful I'll be forced to use it even if I don't like it. The reason this board is useful, is to see what others do and then see if it works for you. There's so much I never even tried that someone just casually mentioned and it made my picture taking life so much more enjoyable.

[/rant]

Those are some things I did that made using my t3i better, see if you like it.
