I dropped my 70-200 F/4L IS lens. I forgot that I did not zip the bag, and it just rolled from it down from a couch on a hardwood floor. The IS now make a fairly loud clicking sound when engaging or disengaging. The problem is that I do not remember whether or not it made the same sound before I dropped it. I just never paid any attention to it!

Then I decided to test it, handheld, at low shutter speed, to compare IS with non-IS shots. Sometimes I see the difference, sometimes I do not.

Do you guys think it is worth sending it to Canon for a check-up? And if I do, how much should I expect the whole thing will cost me if Canon says that there is no issue?

Zoom to 200 mm and turn on live view and zoom in maximum.ยด

Now you should clearly see if the IS is stabilizing the image or not.

The lens is most probably fully ok so unless you have issues with it I don't see a reason to send it in.

Thanks, this is how I tested it, and as I said, I could not be certain, even after spending an hour shooting a printed high resolution target.

You don't need to shoot anything - you just need to aim the camera towards a suitable subject and activate live view maximum zoomed.

With lens IS switch in on or off position, you should see a significant difference in how much shake there is on the live view display.

Not even any need for any high resolution target, since the goal isn't to look at how sharp photos you get.

Thanks, and that is my problem. Yes, with the IS the image immediately stabilizes. It works. But in a short time, a couple of seconds, it starts moving, even though I still hear the sound of the IS. And a loud click when I release the shutter button.

Sometimes the is can click engaging and disengaging and could be pretty loud. Probably normal.
