I've been wanting to upgrade my macro rig for a while. It consisted of my usually holding my flash w/ flash bender in my left hand and wasn't convenient or comfortable. So I finally bought some stuff from B&H to try out. I had the flash bracket and cord. Bought the diffuser and mini ball head. I wasn't sure the mini ball head would work but it seems okay so far. I haven't had a chance to really try it yet but I took a sample shot. I'm excited. It seems that the light is a lot more even. :D

Looking good. Best way to make use of the bigger speedlight i guess.

That's how I started i.e with heavy bracket and huge speedlight. However, it wasn't just the weight, but the hassle of adjusting the ballhead to point the light at the right distance for different magnification.

yeah thanks for the comment. since i just have the 100 right now, i'll see how this works. i'd love to get an MP-E65 and this probably would be a hassle with that. if i ever get into that, i'd probably invest in the MT-24 flash too

My .02: Move your flash over so that your hitting the subject with the light from the side instead of head on. You'll get better shadows, and the subject will look even more "3D". As is the light is gonna look "flat".

Cool setup. I'm planning to build one of these too. All ideas and examples help.

If you go with the MPE65, you will need to set the light way back. Hopefully that will be possible to do. If so, it will probably work great with it.

Why? The closer the light source is to the subject the better the diffusion -getting the light further back just means "hot" specular highlights and bad overall light quality...

Close is good, beyond the subject is not.

No idea where you're going with that comment.
