My current outfit is as Follows

Canon 7D
10-20 sigma F4-5.6
18-35 Sigma Art DC F1.8
24-105 Canon L F4
50 canon (version 1) F1.8
100 Canon Macro F2.8 non IS
70-200 Tamron (new version) F2.8

Back Up Body Canon XSi

I love the 7D so much, I love the build quality , speed, Auto Focus and all the cross type points, and lots more.

I've been shooting more and more concerts as of late, some nice pro venues but still a good amount of clubs with atrocious Dark LED WAsh lighting etc.

This is where the discouragement of the 7D comes. I won't dear try to shoot over 1600 ISO. It becomes complete rubbish and a lot of times unusable for noise. I also do a lot of landscape HDR and that -2 photo at the blue hour or night is a mess too.

I've looked at the 6D, 5D3, At The great price 6D seems to be such an obvious choice. I'm scared about the single only cross center point. The concert stuff happens fast almost like shooting sports with guys running and jumping while playing. The low light ability of the 6d at high iso's sounds and looks incredible

Will I be happy?? That one center point makes me nervous, It seems there are so many better qualities over the 5d3 in so many other categories.

I will sell the XSI, keep my 7d as a back up

it may sound crazy but a few mentioned the 70d should be considered, hmmm, not sure thats a good idea.

I know the 7d2 is due out prob september but have they addressed the low light issues??

Anxiously awaiting your thoughts and replies

Sure the 6d would work for you, but I suspect with some changes in how you shoot and how you process your files, you can easily get another stop out of your 7d. There is no reason why you shouldn't be able to use 3200. Click my mini reviews link in my signature, and check out the 7d thread. I personally don't think you have exploited all your 7D is capable of, and if you pick up a few tricks to expand your ISO by at least one more stop, you will be able to do the same with a FF in the future.

Now if you have the itch to buy new gear, and this provides the impetus, I fully understand that. :)

As I have never owned a camera with anything but a single-cross focus (T1i, 5dii, 6d) I can't compare the two focus systems. I have used the 6d in school events in dark auditoriums without problem, at the grandchildren's night sporting events, etc.

If and when the 7D2 is released, without a doubt it will have much better ISO performance. The sensors have changed in the past 5 years to allow much better ISO performance.

Good luck with your decision!

Heya,

If you really want to shoot low light, the 6D really is a low light titan and better than anything else in this price range that Canon has to offer. The 6D refurb deal is fantastic. It's over, over stated, the cross points for focus. The 6D focuses fine. It can dig down deeper at -3 EV for focus. It's really good at the center point. It's slightly weaker at the outer points, but not to the point of you throwing it on the ground. If you want to spend twice the price, and get similar ISO performance (not quite as good), and a bit less -EV for AF, but keep the AF system you're used to, the 5D3 does that. But for what you've described, I'd go 6D.

You'll be rethinking your lenses after this when you see how much you can push the ISO.

Very best,

Rent a 6D for a concert, it'll likely put all your concerns to bed ;)

You can also use the XSi as a trade-in via Canon's Loyalty Program and use the 7D as your backup.

Call them as they have the 6D in their refurb section.

I would consider that a waste of good money? Just sell the XSi, and pick up a $10 point and shoot.

I upgraded from crop to eventually the 6d due to the high ISO I needed for concert photography. 10,000 ISO is very usable with this camera. For the price, it can't be beat. I never really had anything but the simple AF system either.

Some of my feedback

The 6D/7D combo is one hell of a kit.

All with a rented 6D. This was only the second concert I had ever shot; the first was the same group, but with my T1i earlier in the spring. I use BBF.
