I am trying to get into shooting Sports T&I Portraits and hoping to find a lighting setup using Speedlites that will work to extract the players to include on other backgrounds. I am looking at speedlites as they are portable and can use batteries both indoor and out. Your help is greatly appreciated!

how about using a green screen along with your speedlights and some basic shoot thru umbrella's and using PS or another program to replace the background

A white 10'x10' collapsible shade cover makes a great sun blocker and the metal frame makes it easy to mount speed lights below the canopy but above the player and background. Get an ND filter to cut a couple of stops of light and blur the background to make the comps easier to separate in PS. Or you can get an 600± WS strobe with a nice reflector and do it straight under the sun with squinty eyes and harsh shadows.
