I'm not sure I would say they are dead last in IQ. More like dead last in DR, tonal range, color sensitivity, resolution, and shadow detail.

Thanks for the information DarthVader. Looks like these mirrorless cameras are nice alternative to rebels for simple users with similar budget and smaller form factor. What about the lens? Does Sony make cheaper lens as good as Canon stm lens (10-18, 55-250, 18-55)? Is there any sigma DX lens (30mm 1.4, 17-50 is) for mirrorless format.

In other words, pretty much everything that makes up IQ.

At ultra-high ISOs, it all balances out, since shot noise dominates over any sort of electronic noise. But, unlike everyone else, Canon sensors don't produce any better results at ISO 100 as compared to ISO 800.

Hey khwaja, Sony 18-55mm, Sony 70-300mm f/4.5-5.6 SSM G (a bit pricey), Sigma AF 12-24mm f/4.5-5.6 EX DG, and Tamron AF 17-50mm f/2.8 SP XR Di II LD are pretty good zoom lenses. For primes there are Sigma 30 f/1.4 DC HSM, Sony 35 f/1.8, Sony 50 f/1.8, etc.

what is surprising is that people still buy Canon cameras... Canon should be glad for mass numbers of ignorant consumers..

I was holding out hope canon would come out with an answer but its seems like its not gonna happen...sigh. I will be selling off most of my canon stuff pretty soon. Probably get a Pentax 645Z or go Nikon system.

Sorry...not going to give up my Canon gear. I can still take good photos with it.

They sell lots at the low end of the market, where good marketing and gimmicks will sell you lots of cameras and where buyers aren't very discerning or specific in their requirements.

They also sell lots for sports, action and event/news photography purposes, where most shooting takes place at high ISO and the video functions can be useful.

Most people who need high resolution, dynamic range and ultimate image quality have moved to Nikon/Sony by now. I rarely see high-end Canon cameras during landscape photography expeditions any more.

You don't have to give it up. I shoot he A7r, but don't own a single Sony lens. Basically, I put the best optics (from any manufacturer) in front of the best sensor. Minimal AF capability, but mountains don't move very fast.

Some silliness in this thread. I never knew my canon cameras can no longer take good pictures. I guess all those photos pre sony sensors by all manufacturers need to be trashed. Yes, I would like a little more dynamic range, but the majority of the time I don't miss it. Oh I use to own a d800.
