I haven't owned the regular 50 1.4, but I have a shooting partner that does. It is reasonably sharp, but the AF struggles in low light. I use the 50 ART on the 5DIII (with cross points only), and I have found the focus to be extremely consistent and reliable (comparable to L primes), with no micro adjustment needed.

snake0ape Goldmember More info | I upgraded my sigma 50 to the sigma 50 art. The sigma art is noticably sharper especially at the edges. Also the sigma art can focus in lower light levels whereas the old sigma just hunts. 5Diii | 50D | 8-15L 4| 16-35L 2.8 II| 24-70L 2.8 II | 70-200L 2.8 IS II |Tamy 150-600 | Σ35Art 1.4 | 40 2.8 | Σ50Art 1.4 | 85L 1.2 II | 100 2.8 Macro | Helios 44-3 58mm f2.0 |Helios 40-1 85mm f1.5 | 1.4x & 2x teleconverters

That's interesting... all of the samples I've looked at show a clear difference in how they render backgrounds, my preference going to the old version. I love how the old sigma renders the background. I sold it only because the new sigma renders it the same. The only difference is the edge sharpness to out of focus transition at certain light conditions and focal distance. The old sigma has that soft "glow" whereas the sigma art has a more abrupt edge sharpness fallout. 5Diii | 50D | 8-15L 4| 16-35L 2.8 II| 24-70L 2.8 II | 70-200L 2.8 IS II |Tamy 150-600 | Σ35Art 1.4 | 40 2.8 | Σ50Art 1.4 | 85L 1.2 II | 100 2.8 Macro | Helios 44-3 58mm f2.0 |Helios 40-1 85mm f1.5 | 1.4x & 2x teleconverters

photographyByEvangelos Goldmember 1,167 posts Likes: 1 Joined Jan 2003 Location: Florida, USA More info | I have owned and tested quite a few fifty’s over 14 months, Canon 50 1.2L (never liked it), Canon 50 1.4USM, Sigma 50 1.4 (older one) and the new 50 1.4 Art. What I see in the new Sigma 50 1.4 Art you ask? For me it’s the best 50 in the market blows away the over priced Canon L (big time) and is sharp wide open at 1.4, AF is really good. I know many will say “but it’s heavy”! However that’s really a non issue once you see what the lens is capable of producing it’s a stunner.
