Hi there

My SD card seems to be sick.

I have a SX50

When connecting though the camera, the camera will not connect.

I have tried with a new card, and camera connects fine, so must be the card.

The card shows photos fine on the camera.

But the card won't show up on a SD card reader, so I can't get them off and try reformatting the card.

The card is a 32 GB Kingston - only used in the Canon - and it has been fine up till now.

Any good ideas that won't lose the photos on the card - there is a whole stack I just shot and haven't transferred yet :-(

Thanks
Nic

Is the SD card reader that you're using an external reader (usb or firewire), or is it a reader built in on the desktop or laptop computer you're using? I have a sketchy 8GB Kingston 100X ultimateX sd card that has this behavior as well. On the first and/or second try of putting the sd card in the reader, it will fail to recognize the card or the filesystem. After "safely removing" the card (on either Windows or OS X), and gently reinserting the card in the reader, I get my files to read and transfer on the computer. Try this out and see if that helps you, and also you could always set the switch on the card to read-only just to be on the safe side.

Needless to say I don't use this card very often anymore because of this issue. For the future, I would strongly suggest getting cards from a different manufacturer. :-)

Thanks.

I started hooking the camera direct as usual - got an error on the camera.

On same PC I tried a card reader - it sensed the card but just continued for ever trying to read it.

Second laptop didn't even recognize that a card was inserted.

Final effort , a mini Sony laptop , could read the card fine so I transferred all my missing files to a USB stick and then into my albums.

Phew !

But what to do with the card. I think I will try reformatting it in the camera and seeing if it works again.

Erm, get another card. A decent 32gb or 64gb can be sought for less than £15/£30 respectively.

Another quick question is yours a MicroSD in an adaptor or a full blown card?

Full / normal SD.

Yeah, think I'll invest in a new one. I was looking at / thinking of the wifi type - tried that ?

Yup, dump the (possibly) bad card; it's not worth the risk of losing pics.

I've opted for a standard card, Sandisk Ultra 32GB Class 10. Very efficient card for transfers, never failed, had it a bit now.

...Many so called recovery programs are worthless when it comes to partition errors, etc... They can't read the card because the File Allocation Table is hosed, so it produces an error like no card present or can't read the card.

Download Photorec here and try it.

It's an ugly DOS like interface, but it gets around many of the file system problems when others like Recuva fail.

It's been a while but I think RescuePro failed to recover files from a SanDisk CF card that had a FAT problem...but honestly I can't remember 100%.
