I'm an aspiring University Student, and like many i'm making the move from Nikon to Canon!

But... I have no clue about Canon cameras, other than anytime i've used one its always better than what i seem to get out of the Nikon!

Basically I need help to decide which Canon I should be looking at investing in!

I rent a Nikon D7000 and a Nikon D300 so i'm looking to move to the same standard just in Canon...

Please HELP!

Danny,

Danny,

From your description, you don't need "help" as much as you need knowledge and experience.

Any properly working DSLR will help you learn. Consider something such as a used 550D (external link) in good condition. A camera such as that would present no obstacles to your learning. Until you have the necessary experience, anything more sophisticated would be a waste of money. Of course, if you'd rather have equipment than food...maybe that would be a better subject for a poll.

I voted the 70D for you. pretty good ISO performance for a crop camera - no need to go 5DIII until you have the skills/glass to really use/need that camera.

if money IS an issue... any number of XXD canon's are out there and are perfect to start learning on.. I spent less than $200 for a 20D w/lens and battery the other day. Perfect for someone to start learning on.. or learn it is all they'll ever need.

Godox/Flashpoint r2 system, plus some canon stuff.

Not being funny, but the 70D is a tad expensive, especially for a student where the OP has no potential income coming in, unless money is no object and won millions in the state lotto (if they have one), and at the moment the OP is renting a Nikon.

Danny, I think you need to frame your question a bit more specifically, ie what is best for what and how much can you afford?

What sort of subjects will you shoot, travel, wildlife, architecture, street? The best for each is very different.

Also you need to consider what lens set you need in the end and what you can afford to start with. Don't think of just the camera, think of the whole system. This might be hard if you are new to photography.

If you are very new to photography this might take a lot of work. Read good quality photo magazines and see what they photographers used as a guide.

For general photography you might want an affordable body and a "standard zoom" that provides moderate wide angle to moderate telephoto.

Remember, digital bodies come and go but glass is for ever they say. The lenses will have a much longer period before obsolesce and a larger impact on the quality of the images.

Of the choices in the poll, 70D because it will give you great video performance in conjunction with one of the STM kit lenses, but you're really shooting high for a beginner. All of the options are a lot of camera for someone just starting out. What do you want to shoot? What is your budget? Are you going to school for photography or do you just want a camera to take with you?

I've never seen a picture taken with a Canon that couldn't be taken with a roughly equivalent Nikon, and vice-versa. Save your money and spend more time with the gear you have.

Danny,

If you're really learning about photography, the brand name you should consider isn't Nikon or Canon, it's Sekonic (external link).

Lighting is among the most important technical factors in photography. To understand lighting, you need to know how to measure it with a meter. Rather than trying to choose between the differences in camera bodies, look for a good light meter (external link), so you'll be prepared to best handle those differences.

Thanks to everyone who replied,

I'm moving into my 3rd year in university, and i'm a fairly well experienced photographer, so i'm not looking for entry level.

I'm a shooting Fashion Editorial at the moment but I have passions in Landscape & Travel, and want to experiment more with video (GoPro got the best of me).

also budget, i want to keep at around £1500, i'm saving at the moment and wont be able to purchase until early 2015 but I just need to know where I should be setting my sights.

also full frame is preferable.

Hi Danny, full frame would be best for your areas of interest but not essential.

If looking at new a 5DIII is out of your budget but the 6D is in plus a bit left over for a lens.

The 6D + 24-105 f/4L IS is a bit out of you budget at ~£1800, would be a good starting system perhaps also a fast prime in the 50mm region, the 50/1.8 is cheap and not well built but quite good optically ~£90 I think. The 50/1.4 is better and more expensive but breaks easily. Alternatvly there is the 85/1.8 a good portrait lens, £290.

The 7D is and excellent crop camera comming in at £800 now, it may be replaced soon but it is very good value. Could couple with the EF-s 17-55 f2.8 IS £620, note this lens can't be used on a full frame camera.

Canon 6D is probably the ticket then. A clean used one may bet the best bet.
