The person I bought the ST-E2 said he could not get them to fire in manual. The test I did was very simple (did not involve a camera). I just sat the flashes on a table and made sure the ST-E2 made them fire.

I was able to get the ST-E2 to fire the 550EX in manual mode. I was also able to play with the ratios. ETTL is fun right now. As I learn more, I am sure I will be placing everything in manual (not the 420EX). I would like to replace or add another 550EX, but here is a sample. Setup is the same as I have. Now I just need a way to get a hairlight involved using a 550EX.

Im going to make up a softbox as my main with the 580ex, fill with 550ex and hairlight 550ex. The ST-E2 as trigger. Well thats the idea anyway. Should work great! I want to get another 550EX. My 420 has worked fine in the past as a hairlight by adjusting the ratios. You can easily put all three of yours in manual and get what you want. Must be nice!
