Was Master/Slave switch on the 550EX set to slave mode before you switched it to Manual mode?

The person I bought the ST-E2 said he could not get them to fire in manual. The test I did was very simple (did not involve a camera). I just sat the flashes on a table and made sure the ST-E2 made them fire.

I just got some umbrellas and will be doing some real tests tomorrow.

ST-E2 will do it if you don't want a flash on-camera, but like Leo said, you'll need to decide whether you want the hair light to be A or B group, since main and fill will probably be different groups. Can't use them on Manual either, since ST-E2 doesn't support manual either (I vaguely recall someone posting a kludge to get something like that going, but it was just that).

The flashes can be all set to manually individually and fired with the ste2. Hold down the mode button for 2 seconds. You can also use a combination of manual and ettl. I sometimes set my 580 as main(a) 420 as fill(b) and set a ratio on the ste2. Then set my 550 to manual and use it as a background or hair light.

Since I don't have the ST-E2 I can't be certain but I thought you could set the flashes to manual mode and set their respective powers on the flashes and then fire them off with the ST-E2.

This is true. You can also set them individually and fire them with a 550/580. In situations where you need more than three flash groups this is useful.

Just got done playing with my new set-up (ST-E2, umbrellas and stands). I was able to get the ST-E2 to fire the 550EX in manual mode. I was also able to play with the ratios. ETTL is fun right now. As I learn more, I am sure I will be placing everything in manual (not the 420EX). I would like to replace or add another 550EX, but here is a sample. I could not get a good model but this one did not fuss.

Setup is the same as I have. Now I just need a way to get a hairlight involved using a 550EX.

Im going to make up a softbox as my main with the 580ex, fill with 550ex and hairlight 550ex. The ST-E2 as trigger.

Well thats the idea anyway.

Should work great! I want to get another 550EX. My 420 has worked fine in the past as a hairlight by adjusting the ratios. You can easily put all three of yours in manual and get what you want. Must be nice! :)
