You have to convert them from Raw to either jpeg or TIFF. You can't work with the CR2 files inside of PS.

IS there anyway I can set up the camera so I can just shoot in RAW and work the files in Photoshop only and do all my work just using photoshop. Thanks for the help.

I don't understand your problem. Just upload the RAW files to your computer HD. Open Photoshop and select the file name and it will import it for you. I think what Bob A is saying is the file can not be resaved in RAW format. You will have to save it as a Tiff, Jpeg, PSD or any of a hundred others.

If you can not open the CR2 (RAW) file in Photoshop it is perhaps that you do not have the proper RAW plug-in for your version. I see that you have a 20D and I believe the earliest PS support is Version 8, (Photoshop CS). If you have an older version of Photoshop that may be your problem.
If this doesn't help, please explain your problem in more detail.
Regards,

Adobe PS has no ability to open Raw files and convert them to jpeg. For Adobe PS CS2 this is done using a companion application called Adobe Camera Raw (ACR). So, if I save the Raw files to my hard drive and use File -> Open in PS, they actually open in ACR, not PS. It's the same application that opens up if you click on the Raw file in Adobe Bridge.

If you are using PS Elements 2.0, I don't believe that a version of ACR is available.

To edit images in PS that have been taken in Raw format you need to convert them first to Tiff or jpeg first using something like:

ACR (Adobe Camera Raw)
Rawshooter Essentials (there is a free version available)
Digital Photo Professional
EOS Viewer Utility

just to name a few, and all will do a decent job.

Well, all plug-ins are programs. They just work within another host application, so that is a moot point.

The Adobe RAW plug-in does not convert RAW to another file format. I bring that up because I think that would confuse someone like X-WoodButch who is trying to get started with RAW workflow. Adobe RAW is just an 8bi file format plug-in that allows Photoshop, (or another host application), to import the file just like the 8bis that allow the importation of Png, Gif, Tiff or many other file formats.

You can confirm that the file is imported in Cr2 RAW format by opening the file in Photoshop and going to the file's EXIF data. It will show that the file is a CR2. You can also look at the file name extension on the image.

You can edit a CR2 all you want, you just can't save it in RAW. That's where the other file formats come into play.

Regards,

If you have Photoshop CS or CS2, just right-click on your CRW file and select open with Photoshop. If Adobe Camera Raw plugin was installed on your computer, Photoshop will automatically open the Raw file in ACR.;)

Holy,

How the heck do you do that directly into PS? Are you using another plugin like ACR, or are you using PS as orignially set-up?

Always happy to learn something new ... (and crow doesn't taste all that bad)

I sandbagged you a bit there... I opened it in ACR and clicked Open, which opens the image in PS proper. The only time I use this is when I am combining two or more exposures to increase DR. It just eliminates the save step and then navigating to the PSD file and reopening it. Basically, a tiny time saver.

BTW, I have some good recipes for crow!

grrrr ... ya got me! :)

I believe you can also use the ACR plugin to do batch conversion in PS using the Automate -> Batch dialog in PS, but I haven't messed with it to see how.

Just make a multiple selection in Bridge, and either right-click > Open in Camera Raw, or File > Open in Camera Raw, or even just Ctrl-R. Once in Camera Raw, click Select All, and Save.
The thing that escapes most is that once you've made some changes to the parameters in ACR, or applied settings to a raw file in Bridge, the conversion is done. It's saved in the sidecar file. You have a graphical representation of the raw data built from those two files. You just haven't saved it in a format that will hold other edits such USM, dodge and burn (you know, all the typical PS gyrations we go through) and be presented in a more simple program, i.e. a web browser.

What you have described is the way I do it. Maybe that's what Adobe meant when they stated that a batch command could be used. I thought there might be another batch approach using an action right in PS ... not that it would be very useful.

I think that is what they meant too, although I don't see why it wouldn't be too difficult to add ACR to the Batch Dialog. I guess it doesn't really matter, and would create a whole bunch of "I do it this way" arguments on here. :)
