Hello everyone,

as this is my first post I would like to introduce myself first. I am Strahinja, a 20 year old journalism student from Serbia, I've gotten my first dSLR (the mighty 1100D!) a year and a bit ago, but I have loved photography my entire life. Just recently (don't have a clue how I missed it) I have discovered this forum and I feel right at home.
I have been browsing endless threads for the past couple of days, but leaving that aside I do have a couple of questions some of you might be able to help with. I did a search beforehand, but I couldn't really find all the answers.

I will attempt to ask you, what I actually need help with, without looking like a total spanner.

Among many photographers that I follow, I especially like the feel and the look of McCurry's photos. While I know that his geniality lies in the way he approaches people and captures the very essence of their soul, not in complicated techniques, I can't help but wonder how to get closer to the "look" of his photo(I am not trying to replicate the "feel" I am a looong way from even thinking about that). By that I mean that I adore the representation of colors, they all look so real, deep, bold, almost as if you are there in person. Also I am aware that most of the photos I saw were made on the legendary Kodachrome, so, will I be able to get closer to what I want using post processing and all the glorious perks of the digital age? I am just a newbie at post processing and I have searched a lot (maybe at the wrong places) and experimented for hours on end trying to replicate the colors, but I have come to a point where I feel like a massive idiot.

So I am seeking advice here, if anyone can come forward and point me in the right direction I will be very, very grateful.

Sorry if I made some mistakes or whatsoever, I have an exam in 7 hours and I am frankly very nervous at this point.

Cheers!

hi there Strahinja
welcome to the POTN, forums :)

I would suggest possibly posting 1 or 2 that you have done some PP on and maybe also the way they looked originally
Am sure from that people will be able to offer you some good advice :)

Also, go into your profile settings and turn on the Image Editing option so that people know they can have a play with your images and see if they come up with a variation that you like

cheers
Dave

PS hope the exams go well ... what subjects are you studying ?

I guess the easiest way is to link my flickr until I dig out some from the masses that are on the PC. I haven't been really responsible to update the profile regularly, I am still trying to find sort-of-a-my-style for the photos, hence the hesitation.

Here's the link: https://www.flickr.com/photos/97120114@N02/ (external link)

There's few new images, I'll try to be more active there especially now that I am trying to work out the things that bother me.

Well, the exam this morning didn't go well...probably should have slept. The subject in question here is the dreaded History of political theories...part II. The subjects are pretty much what you would learn under Stalin's rule, but hey, a lot of interesting stuff to be read. Have to wait till the 3rd and 4th year for some genuine journalism-related subjects and practice (Unless the students find their own beforehand).

hi Strahinja

sorry I haven't posted sooner, been a little busy myself
and sorry the exam didn't go so well for you :(

looking at your pics ... I see a good variety of styles and settings ( locations)

of note in a couple ( and these are just my personal thoughts) ... watch your composition
the 3rd pic in from left .. the boy holding hands in front of him, may have been better if the hands symmetrically framed his face

The lower right pic ... girl in front of tree ,,, in most cases its not a good thing to have trees, branches etc appear as though they are growing out of someone's head ;)

cheers
Dave
