I also use a 5D MkII. I haven't been to a Rally for about 20 Years, but I do Photograph Motorcycle Racing so I have some experience of Motosports Photography with a 5D2.

You don't mention if you have any Rally Photography experience with any other Camera's, so at the risk of getting a " I already know that :)" here is what I suggest:

Set the Camera to AI Servo Focus, change the exposure settings during then event to get a mixture of High Shutter Speed "freeze" & lower Shutter Speed "Pan" Shots (the light levels in a UK Forest in November might make Freeze Shot Shutter Speeds a bit tricky!). If you use Auto ISO remember it's restrictions, in Manual Exposure Mode it will default to 400 ISO & in other Modes it tops out at 3200 ISO when 6400 ISO is available Manually if you need it (higher still are available if you allow expanded ISO's but remember that Noise increases wth the ISO). Personally I would select ISO Manually but remember to change it as the Light Levels change to try to use the lowest ISO that will give you the Shutter Speed that you want, also bearing in mind your Aperture preferences as well.

I hope you get another reply from someone else with more experience related to Rallying.

I shot cars racing around a track a couple weeks back, also with a 5D2 (I'm a landscape photographer). I shot in AI Servo, with shutter speeds from 1/30 to 1/60 as I was panning. My keeper rate was about 15-20% and I was quickly reminded why the 5D2 is not an action camera. The motion with the 1/30 speed were 10X better than the 1/60. I guess at higher speeds the difference would not of been that much, but I was shooting as they cornered.

With that being said, I will be ordering a 7D2 toward the end of the year :p

PS: Check out my flickr for pics from the event...
