Going to Disneyland next week. Can't figure out if I want to go "kinda light" and take my SL1 with the twin kit lens kit (18-55, 55-250), or go "super light" and just take my compact RX-100.

I took a previously owned EOS-M with just the 22mm last time I was at Disneyland, and really appreciated the smaller weight. I've taken DSLR kits on vacation before, but Disneyland feels like a different animal with the heat, crowds, walking, water rides, etc.

Last time I went in April, I just took the rx100. These little cameras don't give up much like the old days. Fits in my pocket for rides, and always there when I need it, below I took it out quick when fireworks went off, used canned fireworks setting. I just can't see lugging all the stuff around , I have done it many times, but not anymore.

Sounds like you answered your own question in your post.

Small and light works better for my trips because the gear doesn't get in the way of the enjoyment. An RX100 or EOS M will be much easier to take on rides than a DSLR...even an SL1

I'm an annual pass holder and take my 2 year old daughter about once a week. About 95% of the time I have my 6D, 24-70, and 430exii, and don't find it more difficult much more difficult than bringing the EOS M. Is usually go in the morning from 10-2 so the heat is on but with my black rapid(recently sold) it's not bad at all. The crowds are dwindling now that summer is over, so it's more enjoyable. My daughter loves the characters so I am always taking pictures.

As for the water rides, the only one to truly be concerned with is grizzly river run. On Splash mountain I put it in a plastic store bag and hold it between my legs, that ride isn't bad at all, but any water near my cam always concerns me lol.

Depends on whether your goal is to photograph the park or have fun with the family and experience the park.

That is true of any family outing, IMHO. So if one is happy with the cellphone pictures, so be it.:)

I just spent a week in Las Vegas. I took my wife, not my camera. A good time was had by all. The cameras were right where I left them when I got home.

Depends on what you are after.

I took my family in June - wife, MIL, 3 yr old daughter and 8 weeks old son. We had 2 strollers so I was able to dump the camera in there while in the park and take it out when needed. Most of shots were of my daughter being herself and with the princesses.

However, I did go back into the park after she went to bed twice - once to get bearings and once for some fireworks. I took a D610 and 35 1.4, 85 1.4, 50 1.8, 70-200 and flash. I carried in the park what I needed, normally camera and 35 1.4 with flash and left the rest in the room. Only once did I carry my 70-200 and tripod and that's when I needed it for the fireworks.

Depends on what you want from the trip and what you plan on shooting.

Here's a couple samples:

Wouldn't it be great to enjoy both? Why do you have to choose? I always take my photo gear on vacation and enjoy both the photography and my wife. They don't need to be mutually exclusive.

Two reasons:
My wife does not share my interest in photography, though she does like the results.
If I have to chose wife or camera, the camera will lose each and every time. Period.

Last I and my family went, I took the 7D and 70-200 2.8. All I shot were large butts, and I wanted to be discreet. There were a LOT of huge butts, the 7D got a good workout.

We're there next week. I'm taking my Fuji X-T1. Taking both the 18-135 and 35 but will only carry one or the other. I have a feeling it will be the 35 most of the time. Almost bought the 23 for the trip.

Fuji convert - Ping me if you have any Fuji gear or legacy glass you're moving.
