Softest light modifier to get for alienbee b800?

I'm thinking of purchasing a b800 but don't know if I should get their PLM system or a deep octabank (does anyone know the difference?)...

I think that because the PLM w/ white diffusion cover is a shallow, bounced source it's weaker and not output as smooth?

Versus a deep octabank (maybe 5' if I can find one?) which I think people like Annie Leibovitz use and I really love how soft the light looks on female portraits. I think the light bounces all inside the octabox before shooting out? Suggestions welcome, thanks!!!

My softest modifiers are 60" and 70" octas.

The 60 is collapsible like an umbrella, but the 70 is lighter so I can boom it farther out.

I owned a PLM for a short while, not a fan of the light it puts out.

Do you know what octabank brand I can buy that will work with the alienbee?

I like the Fotodiox stuff. Economically priced and well built. Just choose the Alien Bee mount option when you order.

Wow this has to be the cheapest 60" softbox on the internet...I've never seen one of this price. The quality has to suck?! I mean, as long as the light coming out is smooth and it can last a few months this will be perfect for me. Thanks for the recommendation!!!

Edit: wait what, am I seeing this right? $60 on amazon?!

Just a heads up that there are two separate Fotodiox Softbox lines. The EZ-Pro is easy to set-up, the Pro not as much. If you are planning to take it down & set it up repeatedly, spring for the EZ-Pro.

Okay you're right the EZ-Pro sets up easier and I don't mind paying a bit extra for the convenience - I have to break it down after every session anyway. This forum is always useful thanks folks!

I would definitely get the E Z Pro.

I watched a video by Karl Taylor he done some test shots using different Broncolor modifiers. I know that not the brand you are looking at but it something to get a small preview. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8NrNpQlabnE (external link)

I have the fotodiox pro. Put it together once. Haven't took it down since. It was so hard to put together and I'm a strong man so I haven't took it apart yet had it since April and held up fine. I just throw it in the back of my SUV if I need it on location. . I may get the plm or the ez one.

Another vote for the EZ-Pro version. I got the 48" Octabox about 60 days ago and really like it. As well built as my PCB softboxes with sturdy metal rods, heavier fabric and includes 2 diffusers. Just order the proper adapter ring and you are all set.

You say heavier and it worries me. Heavier than the PCB material? Because 2 days ago I had the PCB 47" octo fall off my X3200 and now I'm nervous to go any bigger. I'm concerned that PCB's mounting system isn't the greatest :/ I just switched from elinchrom to PCB

I would not mount a 60" octabox on my AB800. OK, maybe in a studio, but on a boom or outside, forget it! The balcar mount system PCB uses is just OK, but the opportunity for mis-mounts exists as you have found out. It needs a double check to make sure it is secure. It is only part of the reason I switched this year to the Godox AD360 lights and the much more sturdy Bowens mounting system. The light modifiers weight is transferred to the light shaft and not thru the light itself. Of course Godox does have some modifiers that mount off the light, but they are 18" diameter or smaller.

Re the Fotodiox vs. PCB modifiers, I feel the the PCB ones were some of the best and the point I was trying to make is that the Fotodiox boxes were very similar. The fabric is equal to PCB, unlike some other inexpensive brands, and should last for years.

So something like the Westcott Zeppelin mounting system would be good for PCB?

I never had any issues mounting photoflex 60" octa on my AB400, AB800 or the Einsteins. Only think I wish these lights had a handle like Elinchrom.

Bobby. Off topic but I just took a look at your signature. Why the redundancy in lenses?
