Just taken delivery of a new Pixma Pro-100 for a new studio i'm opening so client can have prints made

The quality of this printer is staggering.. It really is. stands well up to the quality of any wet lab printer I have used in the past..

I think it is hard to go wrong with modern printers. I had a Pro9500II which is several years old and replaced it with a 3880. I can't tell the difference in quality. I'm sure I haven't used the best labs (not Costco or Walgreen's though), but I also think they are as good as any lab print I've had. Certainly similar to Adoramapix.

Good news is you are really shopping for features now with printers rather than print quality.

Good to hear, considering the Pro-100 is the cheapest and least capable of Canon's Pixma Pro offerings (not meant to be a slight to your printer mate, just stating facts relating to the Pixma pro lineup). If it's as good as you say, the higher-end models should blow you away. I'm considering upgrading my Epson R1900 to a Pro-10.

Pro-10 and Pro-1, using pigment inks (while Pro-100 is dye ink), are probably geared more towards longevity than punch.

While that's true, it's also true that dye inks generally produce more vivid colors and print well on RC papers (especially glossy) without problems. If you combine the PRO 100 with Canon's recommended papers, modern dye inks produce much better longevity than in the recent past. And if your work is for immediate rather than permanent use, the PRO 100 may well be the best choice. The prints just SING!! It also produces exceptional B&W. If you want to print on fine art papers, a dye printer is NOT a good choice.

From what I know of Canon's three PRO model printers, it seems like the PRO 10 is really the weaker one because the PRO 1 is exceptional and also a terrific B&W printer. The PRO 100 us about as good a dye printer as you will find, but the PRO 10 is the under-featured little brother even though all are said to be quite good.

I've had my PRO 100 for about a year and cannot say enough good about it.

Now I have an old A4 HP Photosmart (dye too) and a few boxes left of the great (discontinued) swellable polymer HP Premium Plus Photo Paper.

But one day I'll bring myself to tidy my desk and buy a Pro-100.

Which are the recommended glossy and semi-glossy papers? I would like to check their local availability in advance.

I love my PRO-100, I don't sell anything I print on it so I don't need it to last 100 years. I can always re-print later (like in 30 years) if I really want to. :D

Any of the Canon glossy papers, Canon Pro Luster (exceptionally nice) but not the semi gloss - it looks a little veiled. Red River Ultra Pro Satin. Try some of the other Red River papers they are nice, reasonably priced and very supportive. Red River is direct order from their website only. Canson Infinity - any of their RC papers.

The Pro 100 is unbelievably good for the price. However, be careful buying one for home use, as you can go broke buying frames...

Not to mention ink!!

A lot of people are getting the rebate and selling just the ink & paper for ~100$ Everything I've heard says the ink will last at least as long as the 50 pages of 13x19, so paper and ink costs you 2$ for a 13x19. Good luck mounting that in any frame (much less matted) for anything near that. :p

Yes, if you want to learn to print and have complete control of you printed output. But be aware that there is a learning curve.

No, if you want to save money on printing.
