I have about 20000 shutter releases on this camera and I am now having problems. I press halfway and everything is fine. I press fully and it doesn't fire. I have to press extra hard for it to fire. No good! I am guessing that this has to go to Canon for repair?

I had the same problem with mine a while back. Apparently, there's some wafer-like contact in there that wears out after a while. I don't recall how much the repair was, though. I took mine to Canon in Irvine, CA when I lived in California...

This is the quick solution with 100% alcohol. Works fine on my 40D after 10000 shutter releases.

Interesting idea. But I worry I might brick the whole thing.

don't worry, this is a well known problem with the older model shutters that have a lot of mileage - easy fix

My 40D button was sticking, too. I did the alcohol thing (97%) and it worked. I left the battery door open overnight to make sure it dried out well.

Just be sure to pull out the little battery too

Well - I just may be doing this because Canon just sent me an estimate of nearly $500. Sensor cleaning was part of the estimate, but still...

But the button isn't sticking, I have to press it extra hard to make the shutter trip. Unless that is considered sticking.

I haven't had to do this but watching several videos on line I wonder if the use of a finger over the end of soda straw might work better in terms of directing the alcohol to an isolated area?

Exactly what I did. You can place the alcohol directly where you want it.

That's the symptom that many POTNers have described. Lots of them have reported success with the alcohol.

My 40D had the same problem at ~100,000 clicks. Sent it to Canon CPS for a cleaning. They fixed it, no charge.

99% alcohol worked for me on my 50d. Mine also started with delayed shutter and eventually went to missed actuations. I looked at some videos to get an idea of what was located where inside the body, hung my camera off my tripod so that the shutter button was at the lowest point and used a syringe with needle directed towards to button from the battery compartment and injected slowly mashing away at the shutter button and letting the alcohol just drip out, being very careful where it lands. Warm dry air to accelerate evaporation and back to a working camera.

For the more technically inclined. THere are also disassembly video which show how to get to and take apart and clean the contact for the shutter button or even replce, which probably is a longer term solution.
