I need a tripod for an upcoming trip (10 days and counting!) to the beach. I want to get a few family shots using a remote release and a tripod. I do most of my photography on the run behind my kids, and have yet to really want a tripod (I know, I should want the best and greatest, but it just isn't in the budget for something I would so rarely grab. My monopod has been gathering dust for 2 years)

Even with it being a single purpose purchase (for beach trip as mentioned), I don't want to throw money away on something that is so poor it will break with first use or (worse!) ruin my body or lens. I've searched the forums-think something like this
http://www.amazon.com …cr_pr_product_top?ie=UTF8 (external link)

or this
http://www.amazon.com …ef=cm_cr_asin_lnk?ie=UTF8 (external link)

would work, or is there a better/equivalent one I should look for? Any comments on using them? I've never used a tripod and my monopod maybe twice, so I got lost in the reviews re: specs

its easy to throw money at tripods and ball heads. Those you posted links to seem like they would fit the bill

The two you linked to are actually pretty good bang for the buck. I'd say go for it :)

If you have access to Costco, I got this Dolica CF tripod + head as a second. Pretty light, and seems stable enough for my 5DIII + 70-200. Quarter-turn leg-locks work fine.

Goes on sale sometimes; I got it for $79.99.
