Finished the assembly today, there's a little play in the coupler that I need to tighten up somehow. Pipes are obviously PVC (from Home Depot), the camera platform is about 1/8" hard plastic that I drilled a 1/4" 20 tripod screw through. Made the base out of plastic electrical boxes.

That's my 7D with the Tamron SP 90mm VC on top of it, and the motion seems to be relatively fluid. I don't see myself shooting with a much heavier right on it anytime soon, and may end up using my mirrorless stuff on it more than anything.

The ones I've seen usually run the pvc into the electrical box.

Did you use felt on the inside of the pass thru for the base?

The grass isn't greener on the other side, it's green where you water it.

I didn't follow any plans, mostly winged it.

Yeah, there is a small felt pad on the upper section of each contact part of the the coupler. I drilled holes in the bases of the electrical boxes to stake it to the ground, or wingnut it to lightstands for stability too.
