Last weekends high tides brought out the waders. Here's a sampling: Green Heron, Great Egret, Tri-colored Heron, Reddish Egret:

Couple of Canon bodies, a couple of Canon lens, few gadgets all stuffed in a bag...and a stick, and a tripod.

Very nice collection. I've never seen a reddish Egret here.... but I'm sure I'll stumble on one eventually.

About 10% or so are leucistic(all white) and easily mistaken for Great Egret. Reddish are easily distinguished by their feeding behavior. They run around in the water, almost druckenly, with wings outspread in order to both spook some fish, and provide the shade to see them by.

Didereaux,

Thanks for the information. I'll keep an eye out for that feeding behavior. We should start seeing northern birds showing up here at our local nature preserve soon. I'm kind of stoked. We just discovered it last fall.. it was closed for a while and I totally forgot about it. Years ago, we went there but as I said it was closed.

Anyway, lots of birds congregate there of varying species. I just picked up a used 400 f/5.6L and the Kenko 1.4X. I've been practicing. Should be a lot of fun this coming season.

Very nice set of images, some of my favorite herons.

The all white Reddish Egret is a color morph. Leucism is a defect in color pigmentation at the cellular level. Color morph is an actual coloration developed within the species bloodline. The Reddish Egret is dimorphic, seen in both the standard(dark) and the white morph, as is the Great Blue Heron. Most commonly leucism is seen in the pied form, dark/normal eye coloration and a majority of white feathering with some normal pigment mixed in. In some the darker pigment can be seen as a majority of the coloration with patches of white.

Interesting. Learned something new. Thank you.
