When using a hotshoe flash (say for instance a 580ex), is there a maximum size modifier you can use, before the output is too weak to be useful? I'd like to get a large soft box, but not sure if I'll be throwing mo eh away if I was to go for something like a 50"!?!

Cheers

If you are inside, then you can use a fairly large box. Outside, at noon, you are screwed with any modifiers. What do you want to do?

Inside and out, but not trying to over power the sun. Full body shots in shade on a sunny day?

Outside in the shade probably won't be enough power for full body. Just a semi-educated guess.

I'd say... it depends.

Are you just doing fill light?

For fill light i use the westcott 50x50 with a mitos+ flash outdoors. I try to keep the flash at 30% to Ambient light. Dont be afraid to bump your iso up.
