I've been shooting with 1DsII bodies for the past 8 or 9 years now (with a 5D Classic occasionally thrown into the mix). I pay my bills with my photos and I've always vowed to use good business sense and not fall victim to G.A.S....and that has worked well for me. My goal was to never upgrade until something came along that was so good that it would easily pay for itself in additional sales and opportunities. Over this time, I've kept an eye on the ever changing models but have never been "dazzled" enough to buy into any of them.....at least until now. As a 1 series user, I always assumed that my next upgrade (whenever that happened to happen) would be to a new 1 series Canon. I've been so thrilled with how my 1DsII's can nail focus in near darkness and always produce outstanding results along with being able to take a huge amount of abuse day after day (well maybe not abuse, but they have definitely been bumped, dropped, dangled, clashed, rained and snowed upon over and over again). The 1DsIII looked nice but was certainly not any type of revolutionary upgrade. Then came the 1Dx....well now I'm really thinking......if for nothing else, the high ISO capabilities and video would maybe be a nice add on at times. So I start a little research....maybe it is time for me to upgrade to something with better capabilities. After a bit of research....up pops the 5DIII on my radar. I find raving reviews about all aspects of the camera operation from IQ to AF. I found many people who were previous or current Canon 1 series owners claiming that the AF was as good or better than anything they have ever experienced from a 1 series body (excluding the 1Dx). So...several days ago, I was presented with a choice.....I was going to upgrade to a new camera body. The 1Dx was tempting yet I decided to give the 5DIII a try. I figured that if I could find something that was head and shoulders above my MkII's for a couple of thousand dollars less, I should at least seriously consider it.
I received my new 5DMKIII today and my first impression is "WOW"...there are so many options for customizing this camera to perform in many different roles. My biggest concern is build quality......I love how my 1DsII's can (and have) take a beating year after year without ever missing a beat. While the 5DIII seems quite robust on first impression, I'm a bit apprehensive as to how it will hold up to heavy use (and non-use as it daggles by my side, banging into whatever it will day after day).
So, today, I start a new chapter (or maybe just a footnote) in my career with the 5DIII. I hope it holds up to all of the rave reviews and expectations I have of it.
