Hi again,

I practiced doing focus stacking shots as i want to see how the results are, so i did shoot few subjects for that purpose, the lighting wasn't my main goal, not the composition, it is just shoot the subject with different focus ring moving around to get all or most parts in focus, so i hope to see what you all think and i would like to see what you do ourself, i always learn from others.

Here is the result of one subject i did shoot as practice/test:

IMAGE: http://s26.postimg.org/4iaavykzd/Stacking.jpg

Maybe i didn't nail it good enough, but for a first try, it is not bad for me.

I did use Hasselblad H4D-60 with HC 120 macro lens for the shots, one light source [one Hensel light with i think a 7" or 9" reflector i can't remember], and i processed the RAW files under Photoshop CC only for stacking, nothing else, and very minimal pp after the stacking is done.

Here are the images i was using for this result above:

https://www.hightail.com …ad/ZUcwWGJFMVhveFBSc01UQw (external link)

The stacking process took long time because the RAW file of each is over 70mb each [average 75mb], so no wonder why it took that long, but i don't know if i should pp each file then convert them to JPEG and then try to stack them again? Just if i pp each then i am worried if one or more shots will have different tone or colors and exposure or brightness that may lead to not good focus stacking process.

I saw CA on some buttons, so i think i should pp the RAW file to have best JPEG shots out of it then stack those after, I will try again later and hope to find a better subject to shoot.

Also, how many shots i should take for better focus stacking? and what is the technique so i can get the whole subject in focus or sharp? i just took about 8-12 shots of subjects i tested, later i will put another subject i did after but not sure if i should pp the RAW first or just do it as the above one with RAW files stacked.

I would like to see your results as well, so i can see what i did wrong and what things i should do and more.

I've been experimenting with focus stacking also, Tareq. I just turn the focusing ring bit by bit and then stack in Photoshop. I'm thinking of buying Zerene Stacker though as Photoshop messes up quite often. Anyway, here are two of my attempts:

Here's an example of how Photoshop messes up sometimes as some of the yarn and bowl is clearly not in focus.

I think the key is to make sure you can get focus of everything bit by bit as you said, it can be tricky a bit, but it can be done, and maybe you are right, i would like to know another software that can do a better job than Photoshop for focus stacking, i looked into Helicon Focus and today is the first time i am using it, will give it a go and see, i am under Mac so i want only Mac software to do that.

^^^ How come this little creature stayed still for your to stack focus it?
Well, i don't like insects/bugs as they creep me out, but i know many do that stacking focus for macro things too, i hope i can see more of product still life and landscape stacking shots than insects.

Ok, i am waiting to see your findings/impression about it.

Here is another stacked images result, and this time i used Helicon Focus, i can't tell if it is great or any better/different than Photoshop or if my images are good enough to work with actually, but i will keep practicing.

Instead of turning the focusing ring by hand, there are several apps that will calculate the exact number of shots you need to create a stack. I use either DSLR Remote Pro (external link) with the Auto Hotkey (external link) macro, or Helicon Focus (external link) on my Windows laptops, or DSLR Controller (external link) on my Android tablet.

And how this is working? I use Mac laptop and my PC windows laptop is having some issues and i don't like to use it for any photography process, so i depend on Mac completely.

I would like to try one of those apps and see how they can help me in stacking focus, but it is really a fun to do it, since i bought that tabletop i feel i want to shoot more about still life, just i have to watch more tutorials and books about lighting as it is one damn important thing to understand for this kind of photography, and sure it will help me in focus stacking process too.
