For it's price on the used market now ($550ish) it's pretty tough to beat the 24-105 as a general walk around lens. I have a 24-70 a 135 a 70-200 and a number of other lenses, but when it comes down to just needing a nice walkaround my 24-105 is always on the camera.

Agreed. Right now with the huge glut of these on the market it's a heck of a deal, even if it's not super wide on 1.6 crop.

It's a nice choice if you have another way to get wide. Otherwise it's pretty limited.

I always seem to come back to my 17-55mm, even when I try hard not to. For me, on my 60D, the range just always works. The image quality makes my rookie skills less noticeable most of the time.

if you want save money : Tamron 17-50 f/2.8 non-VC version, very sharp lens, optically superb, but it has slower and louder AF.

If you want best lens for crop sensor : Sigma 18-35 f/1.8 -- this is probably sharpest lens for crop sensor, very solid and with fast AF, but for many with limiting range.

Tamron 24-70 VC is another option, but for walkaround lens, 24mm may not be wide enough on crop.

16-35 f/4 IS is very sharp lens, but new and it probably cost more than your budget limit is.
