Remote Shutter Release W/LCD & Timer

I need a new remote release for my 7d. I see a bunch that have a LCD and a timer built in, which seems like an interesting add on feature over the simple push button.

However, I have had wireless releases before, and they batteries always seem to be dead every time I reached for it. So I want to avoid anything that requires batteries to run.

My question.... does anyone know if the shutter release function of these types of remotes will function without a battery. I realize the LCD and the timer require a battery. It looks like the canon version works without a battery, but I can't seem to find anything on the 3rd party ones.

Are you talking Wired or Wireless?

The Wired Intervalometers - like THIS - do use batteries. But they last forever (several years is my experience). The shutter release mechanism should work even when the batteries are dead.

The Wireless Intervalometers - like THIS - needs batteries in the transmitter and reciever. My experience is that the transmitter batteries will need replacing every few months.

I have a wired one similar to Hollis's link. When I'm not using it, I pop one battery out and leave it in a zippered pouch in my camera bag. Three years and it still works when I put the battery in. Probably last a few more years...

Yep, wired ones. My experience with dead batteries has been with wireless ones, and that has scared me. I never considered pulling a battery out, might have to try that.

Yes. The eBay timers (Neewer, etc.) still function as a manual shutter release even without batteries.

try taking the batteries out when not in use,thats what i do theres no need keeping them in 24-7,seems i do this with my flashes to,it works try it.

Works without batteries as a wired remote and has good range and battery life as a wireless system
