Definitely a good wide angle lens. Zoom will give you more flexibility UWA prime might give some exceptional shots too. 17-40 on a FF sounds pretty useful.

Don't forget longer lenses. Details in landscapes can be really interesting and walking closer is often not an option. Not to mention, for photos of the people who live there.

A fast wide angle lens (24 1.4 or 14 2.8) will be really useful for aurora shots (yup, it is that time of year).

Helps sometimes to go to a site like 500px and search for Iceland. Find some images you like and see what focal lengths they were shot at.

Personally, I'd probably take every lens I own. I've never been there but Iceland looks like a photographer's dream.

Is there a limit to what you can pack? Some folks prefer taking a small setup on any trip. If I'm going someplace that will have a lot of opportunities for great shots, I'll go ahead and bring my DSLR gear. Especially if you're packing most your stuff in a large bag to be checked, I'd side with having most my carry on be camera stuff. I'm sure you'll find situations that call for both wide angle and telephoto lenses.

Canon 5D mk IV

Excellent choice of location - just booked my 6th visit for February next year.
Camping kit aside I've taken large format kit, 6x17/5x7 kit as well as DSLR equipment. As far as DSLR goes I pack the following as carry-on in a Gura Gear Kiboko 30l:

Canon EOS 5DII with grip
Canon EOS 40D with grip (as a spare)
Rokinon 14mm 2.8
Canon 17-40mm f4
Canon 24-105mm f4
Canon 70-200mm f4
Canon 24mm TSEII with Pro P Shift Adapter
Gossen spot meter
77mm ND filters
82mm ND filters
cable release
lens hoods for all lenses
lens cleaning stuff
x10 CF cards (16GB)

In checked luggage I pack:

Cokin X-Pro filter kit
Lilliput 5DII/O/P 7 inch monitor, cable and articulated arm
Rain covers
Giottos tripod legs
Induro BH-2 ball head
Nodal rail
Spare camera batteries and chargers

For camping I pack:

4 season sleeping bag
3-4 season tent
washing kit
self-inflatable sleeping mat (essential as many sites I use have rocky surfaces)
first aid kit
stove/pans/spork

In late September be prepared for dropping temps (certainly at night it will get below zero) and plenty of wind and rain. However, the great thing about Iceland is the weather is so changeable!
Have a great time!

Gear? Don't want my wife seeing how much kit I've got ;)

Plan to have the 503CW kit too, but only allow 22Kg check in, and 12kg carry on.

Will carry 2 sleeping bags, -5C down filled and -20C just in case.

1/4 of the stuff will be cloth and daliy stuffs.

You should see this, the filter is 145mm :0

IMO -20 bag is just overkill. If you get cold, just layer up and it should be fine.

I'd carry the leica with 21, 35 and 50 and get a 90 for it. Done.

Otherwise backpacking is not fun because of the weight.
