We went in between Christmas and New year. My most used lenses were my 17-40, 70-200 and strangely my 500!

That's interesting (the 500mm part). What did you use it for. I'm leaving for Iceland in a week and was planning on leaving my 500 at home.

Most of the people I saw with long lenses were shooting birds.

300mm to 400mm is what I think best for the birds in Iceland.
Ultra wide is a must too, 24mm is not wide enough.
70-200mm is another must :)
Fisheye is... ;-)a

I just returned from a fantastic road trip in Iceland. I took the following in my camera bag and found it covered everything i needed (i shoot wildlife and landscapes);

100-400 mk2
16-35 f4
24-105 f4
1,4X extender mk3
Dji Mavic
7d mk2 body
5d mk4 body

Glad i took the 100-400 because i ended up using 400mm for landscapes more often than i expected and it was essential for birds while the extender came in handy too. That all pretty much filled up my camera bag.
