since getting the Sigma 35mm 1.4 i have hardly taken it off the camera but sometimes (indoor parties) wish it was a bit wider

is the 24mm 1.4 just as nice ?

otherwise i was looking to sell off some not used lenes and go for the 24-70 2.8

You mean the 24L II? I think it is though I haven't used one. Everyone says how good it is compared to 35L so I assume it is as good as sigma art.

Take this with a grain of salt that while I do not own the 24L II, I have had the chance to use it for work and helping out a fellow photographer during a shoot, and it is definitely a nice lens. I think the fact that 24L II is a newer design compared to the current 35L helps in terms of sharpness and overall rendition and image quality. Since you already have the Sigma 35, along with 17-40L and 24-105L you should decide what situations you might use the 24L. Daytime landscapes and whatnot are already covered by your two zooms, so if you want wide angle and a fast aperture or are interested in nightscapes and such then it might be worth it. Otherwise I would say save your money and continue to enjoy that Sigma 35 you have. :-)

thank you

its mainly for parties.

both the 17-40 and 24-105 are too slow

im thinking either:

a) sell the 17-40 and get a 16-35 2.8
b) sell the 25-105 and get a 24-70 2.8
c) sell something , and get the 24mm 1.4

I use my 16-35 f/2.8 mk2 alot for parties. I find that lens to be incredibly versatile for getting unique (possibly distorted) look. If you want to be safe lock her down at 24mm or 35mm and shoot like a prime f/2.8.

I own a 35L and my friend has been borrowing it for months...I dont miss it one bit.

My 24Lmk2 is also one of my most favourite lenses at the moment. The micro contrast/sharpness of that prime looks very much like the newer 24-70Lmk2 f/2.8.

Even 24mm sometimes feels restricting when shooting parties (Be it a pub/rented hall/community center kids bday's etc.)

IMO I'd suggest getting the 16-35Lmk2 f/2.8 so this gives you the fastest zoom in that range. It will give you alot of versatility with your high iso performing bodies.

My 24-70Lmk2 f/2.8 is getting some action but most of the time I use the UWA or 24Lmk2 for daily use.

The 24L II is every bit as nice as the 35 ART, both are excellent lenses. I tend to carry the 24L II and 50 ART together these days.

I shoot with 24mm and 35mm a lot. I was afraid that they would be too close in regards to focal length but I haven't had that issue at all to be honest. Definitely pick up the 24L II, its hands down my favorite lens to shoot with. It sharp, renders beautifully and is a joy to shoot with. :)

Thanks Kevin

yes thats exactly what i am worried about , that they are so close in focal length.

my head is telling me the 24-70 would be more practical

my heart is saying the 24mm

Sell the 17-40 & 24-105mm, and get the 24mm L... or wait for the 24mm ART which should be announced in some days.

The 24-70 is a fantastic choice as well, but with the 50mm and the 85mm already in your bag, I think it makes most sense to go all primes :) You'll still have you 70-200II on the long end. Thats going to be one hell of a lens line up if you ask me.

Tony,

The difference between the 24mm and 35mm may seem small. I'll assure you that if you look at two different folders one containing 24L and the other with a 35mm you'll notice a substantial different feel to the images. The 35mm would appear more normal and very regular perspective. The 24mm will have an ever so slight distortion look to it but definitely unique. I'm one of the few that says 35mm is boring on a full frame and "normal" perspective. I'll use that when I need/want the least distortion but semi wide. Normal perspective is easily achievable by any normal point and shoot camera. A client looking at photos from a 16-35 or 24mm will notice something different about the photo BUT I bet they cannot pin point it "why if feels different when they view it".

If you like the image quality of your 70-200 f/2.8 IS mk2 .........you will greatly appreciate the 24-70Lmk2. The micro contrast and sharpness of the 24-70 zoom is extremely impressive and virtually on par with my 24Lmk2 @ f/2.8.

Each to his own when it comes to personal preference. After shooting with the 35L I do prefer the 24Lmk2 for the unique ever so slight distortion.

Since you mentioned "mainly for parties" I'd go for a 16-35 f/2.8 mk2. Possibly a 50mm or 85mm prime on another body. This will give you incredible coverage. If your looking for no flash then lug your 35mm. If your talking about kids parties...... you'll have fun foot zooming with a 24mm prime. I'll guarantee that you'll get more unique photos using a UWA with a 16-35mm compared to using just a 24mm or 24-70mm.

If the "party" is in a larger area you cannot beat a 24-70mm to get great coverage. In this situation in good light I'll use the 16-35 on one body and 24-70 on another.

For casual shooting the 24L is my goto lens for family outings. Pick and choose your tools for every situation your in....

I'm in the same boat. I love the primes. I am trying out some zooms and they capture the moment but they do lack the wow factor.

My main worry is the 24 and 35... too close together. Most do a 35/85/135 setup and then some do a 24/50/85.

I know for a fact that 50 is a great length for me. 35 always seems a bit too wide and 85 seems a bit too long for indoors. But I really love my 35/85 setup and outdoors 85 is just right for most of my situations and the 135 is perfect for longer stuff. If I want longer I'm usually gonna grab the 120-300 as I Feel 200 is too short most of the time.

I really want to try a 24/50/85 setup for a walk around trio. 24L and the sigma 50A and my sig85.

I may just do that, sell the 35 off and get the 24/50

I went out this weekend and did some museum stuff with the kids and really felt 17 was not wide enough and 40 was not long enough for alot of things. I really liked my 24-105 and felt like a 14/24-105 setup would be great. I did bring my 8-15 though and that definately covers the wide lol
