Lust for crop: 50D vs 7D

Hello,

Now I have 5D3 and 6D. Also have good tele lenses, like 200 1.8, 300 2.8 II IS, 400 2.8 I IS. Maybe 5 times had 7D, but I was very unhappy with it.

Now I am tinking to add crop body for cheaper frames and for more tight field of view for birding and sports.

Wondering which deal is better: 50D for $300, or 7D for $580. Difference is almost twice. One of my first camera was 50D. It was OK camera, with 70-200 2.8L IS II managed to achieve marvelous shots. Which cannot be told about 7D, but maybe I had 7Ds for short time and trashed them after FF experiences.

What was your choice in my case? I doubt that 7D2 will be cheap camera, and don't think that 7D pries will come down even more.

what exactly issues you had with 7D? my 70-200 f/2.8 non-IS needed little MFA to get perfect focus on 70D.

Given that you've owned a 7D 5 times (?!?) and weren't happy with it, what makes you think you will be happy with it now?

Personally, I'd suggest a 70D.

70d or wait for the announcement, if there is one, of a new one. Wouldn't think it would be too much longer on the announcement. Personally, if you can't wait and won't consider the 70d, I'd get the 50d.

Or, best of both worlds, get a 1DIV

I see a lot of guys still dropping stunning shots with 40d's and telephotos. I vote "cheap" camera. If you end up going full force on it often, and want more, then look to a 1D series that is older (1D3's can be had cheaply).

I like the 50D a lot. 1D3 may be a good mix for the money too...

60D might be a good way to split the difference. Fairly similar to a 6D in terms of size and controls.

If you had the 7D five times why try for a sixth?

I'd say get one of the 1D series (except for the 1Dx as that's a ff) or wait for the 7D2 to get released.

I have owned several bodies including, the 50D, 7D. 1D mk2, 1D mk3.

The 1D mk3 BLOWS AWAY a 7D for picture quality. Even a 1D mk2 makes a better image that a 7D.

Once I got the 1D bug, I have never looked back. I have owned 2 7Ds and am selling the last one to make room for a 1D mk4.

The 50D I owned for six months and it was good, but went with the 7D for FPS.

Purchased a 1D mk2 for $600 on eBay and was blown away with the image quality, but the menu and small screen were a problem. Sold on eBay for $800 and went with the 1D mk3, same menu system as the 7D for $950. OMG what a great body. Clean no focus issues and fast.

Just my 2cents.

I'm eager to add the 7D2 to my line up, FWIW. But I'm with the others in saying, if the 7D didn't impress you the previous 5x, I don't know why you would think 6th time is a charm.

Agreed, you can get a decent 1D3 for $800-1000 and it's a way, way better camera than either of those two. Otherwise, the 50D and 7D are mostly the same output with the 7D nicer to use during the input (a lot nicer). Shared batteries are nice too.
