today, i was out testing all AF modes and AF zone mode probably interpolates focal plane among all selected points and make calculation average, where focal plane should be. But this is only my speculation.

AF zone mode is great for tracking subjects mid-range and closeups, but for distant subjects, it´s better to switch to single point (70D has quick switch for this)

today BIF thanks to 70D AF zone mode.

None of the modes interpolates among the AF points. But more than one point could of course happen to be covering parts that are at on the same plane of focus.
