Autofocus failed in Rebel T3

Hello! I have already researched a bit on this topic, but I thought I'd come here and try to get a second opinion before I send my camera off to its doom, aka the shop. ;)

I have an EOS Rebel T3 that is a couple years old. It's been used fairly heavily, but never dropped or banged hard that I can remember.

Recently I was messing around with the autofocus points (the little red dots in the viewfinder), and when I tried to set it back to automatic instead of manual focus choice, the AF wasn't working. It would twitch the outer lens ring once or twice, then give up. This persisted over a period of almost a week, during which I reverted to manual focus and ended up with a multitude of blurry pictures. Periodically, it will flash the focus point as if the picture is focused, but it isn't. Now, the ring won't even move when I try to autofocus.

I have cleaned the lens contacts, experimented with different modes, and reset everything to default. The problem is the same with both of my lenses, so I believe the camera itself is at fault. One friend suggested that sand/dust might be interfering, but there is no grating or grinding when I remove/replace lenses and, though I just returned from camping in a fairly dusty/sandy area, the problem began before I left.

Does anyone have any idea what might be wrong, or know something else I could try? There are very few camera shops in my area, short of Sears, and I've never done anything like this before. TIA!

2 things I would try:

re-set to factory settings, try to take a shot in full-auto (you already did this though)

try contrast-detect in LiveView

if you cannot even AF in LV then it is mode likely to be the signal the camera is sending to the lens than the AF itself.

Either way you are likely looking at at least $200 to fix, so consider that before sending it to Canon.

I'm not sure what you mean by contrast detect; I have tried to AF in live view, though, and it didn't work then, either.

$200, ouch.

You don't have it set for back button focusing do you?

I don't believe so. I read about that, but I'm not sure how I would set it back to shutter focusing if I did. I reset everything to defaults, too, though.

Try setting the AF points to just the one in the center and try to shoot in manual mode with the AF button in auto. Try to focus on different things. If all else fails I would try to reset to factory settings before sending it in.
I have the T3 and love it, everyone else says get an upgrade....so I bought a second T3 for back up. Good luck JTP

Did you reset all custom functions as well as all camera settings? If not then BBF is still set.

What lens are you having this problem with and have you tried a different lens?

From the op...

I have cleaned the lens contacts, experimented with different modes, and reset everything to default. The problem is the same with both of my lenses, so I believe the camera itself is at fault.

Check, check, check.

Yes.

What lens are you having this problem with and have you tried a different lens?

The problem is the same both with my kit lens (18-55mm) and my zoom lens (75-300mm).

Try with a lens that didn't go camping with you.

I took my zoom lens with me, but it never saw the outside of the bag.

Aren't they both zooms?

At any rate, knowing that you have a working lens in your test is important. So maybe bring a lens to your LCS or Best Buy, or a canon-owning friend to test it, or do the opposite with the body.

I'm wondering if maybe there is a battery issue? Maybe clean battery contacts (body and battery) and make sure you have a full charge.

What shooting mode are you using? I would test in green box. Once on a nearby cereal box (or other nearby contrasty object), and then on a far away building or landscape feature. Quadruple-check that your known-working-test-lens is not on MF.

This is also an interesting post I just found that may help troubleshoot:

Lastly, here's the search that turned up that article (looking beyond just the T3 for answers...)

I meant my 75-300 mm. I refer to it as the zoom lens because it zooms further than the other one. :|

I haven't tried anything with the battery. I just replaced an empty battery with a full one, but I will try cleaning the contacts.

I'll also try to test my lens/body somewhere else. I have tried shooting in program, manual, and full automatic.

Thanks for the links!
