Not sure how I did it, but I'm glad both FG and BG are relatively focussed .. I used a 7D + 70-200 2.8L IS + 2X II

Will try again today ..

It's called hyper focal. You can get charts to give you focal length and aperture and where in a scene to focus to give you almost entire scene in focus. Pretty cool when you get it right for the scene but can be a pain if you don't think about it and do it accidently for the wrong scene.
ie foreground can be distracting from your intended subject.
you understand f stops. low numbers have less depth of field than large numbers
