I'm beginning to assemble gear to put together a small studio in my home. I'm looking for a good website to order some cheap modifiers (softboxes, strip lights, beauty dish, etc.).

What are some of the "cheaper" brands? Photodiox? Godox? Phottix? Are the Ebay unbranded softboxes even worth it? I'd prefer to get some boxes and strips with the grids if possible. Also, Bowens mount is preferable to the umbrella mount style.

If you want cheap buy second hand.

For the most part an umbrella reflector is an umbrella reflector regardless of brand, so if it looks right it'll probably do the job. There are some exceptions, for example some of the Chinese snoots are too small for a decent sized flash head and are basically useless.

Photodiox EzPro series are excellent. The girds are flimsy, but cheap. The boxes themselves are awesome, easy to open and close.

I just picked up a Fotodiox 70" octo from amazon. Really impressed with the materials and the super soft lite from the box. Going to buy a few boxes now that i have tryed it out.

I like these boxes because they are very directional using with inner diffuser only.

I second Fotodiox, having received a 48" octa and a 32x48" rectangle from them recently, months after I had a similar query for the forum. I bought the Fotodiox because I was looking for Bowens-mount softboxes and preferred them to be foldable. I only bought the grid for the rectangle, though, as I read the Fotodiox ones were not well made and didn't want to risk too much money. Having held the grid in my hands, I concur - I am going to have to baby this grid to keep it together. I likely won't use it unless the objective or circumstance of a shoot absolutely requires it.

I was also directed to OEC Camera who carries the Visico line of softboxes (search for OEC Camera store on ebay). Since these are non-foldable, they tend to be cheaper for the same size of box that Fotodiox has, or larger for the same price (Visico carries rectangle softboxes larger than 32x48", for example). However, the purchase price includes the grids already. I didn't buy from here though, so I can't speak to the build quality of the Visico boxes.

The umbrella style mechanism of the Photdiox Ez-box make the near brainless to set up and take down.

I have some Visico strip boxes that I bought from OEC camera on Ebay. They seem built pretty well and I use them quite a bit in the studio.

I also have a couple of the Fotodiox EZ-Pro softboxes that I use more for location work. They set up and take down in seconds and seem pretty sturdy to me. They're well worth the price.

Amazon!
I have a cowboy studio octa that's really good, quality and build is nice as well. I've tested the Foto Diox as well and the quality is great for the price.
