Hey everyone,

So while out shooting this weekend I noticed that one of my Canon OEM LP-E6 batteries has developed a rattling sound as if something has become dislodged inside the battery. Now this is not the only LP-E6 battery that I own, as I have another OEM and a couple of Wasabi LP-E6's for my camera. I tried to figure out what might be going on but couldn't really come to a conclusion as to what it might be. It does charge fine in the OEM charger (it was at 25% charge after being used in the camera before I noticed the problem) all the way to green (100%) and my volt meter reports a voltage consistent with zero load and the mAh rating of the battery.

Any ideas? I'm assuming that the battery is defective, but does anyone think the battery is still safe to use?

There is a small circuit board inside the battery that hold info like a serial #, etc. It sounds if something came apart on that board, or a soldered jumper line has come free between the cells.

Hmm, that's interesting that you mention that because it does sound like it could be something close to that which is making the sound. Is there any non-destructive way to open the battery? Ive thought about trying to fix it as it is basically a new battery (only 60 days old since I bought it). I should also mention that I was shooting at altitude before this problem, would that have caused this type of thing to occur?

You might want to first check with canon warranty just to see what they say. I am not familiar with their battery portion of the warranty but 2 months in is not an acceptable length of time for an engineered battery with circuitry IMO. There isn't a great way to open the battery without some damage, and even if you did open it, what would you fix if you did find the cause of the malfunction, unless you have some EE background?
