Hi,
I'm planning to buy a new lens but stuck between the 2 lens Canon 35mm F2 IS or the Sigma 30mm f1.4 Art? Which would perform better in low light , IQ & AF?
I know that f1.4 can perform better in low light but I can't decide still which one to look for.
I couldn't find any video or picture samples that compares between these 2 lens.
Need to sell the 40mm f2.8 to fund either one of these lens.

T4i, Σ 17-50 f2.8, 18-55mm, 55-250mm, 50mm f1.8, 40mm f2.8, 85mm f1.8, 430EXII SpeedLite, LR4, DOLICA AX620B100

Play with the aperture to forge your opinion, seems the Canon is way better IMO
(mouse over the picture, mouse out the picture will change the picture to the others lens)

Do you have any plans to go full frame soon? I would say the 35/2 IS is the better lens and would probably be a little more accurate at focusing in servo mode. Plus 1.4 is very thin depth of field which will not only make it harder to nail focus, but also be difficult to get your subject all in focus unless you frame very loose.

I have the non art version of the Sigma and if you don't have FF on the near radar, I think its the better choice than the art version because they can be found on the used market for pretty cheap. Its a solid lens, but I'd advice using it for thin DOF needs and not to try to use as a light pump.

$52 plus shipping (or rent locally if possible) and you could have a few days to really work through the differences:

While compare charts are an interesting first step, ultimately this comes down to how you like the feel of the lens.

I have been using the Sigma 30mm (though I'm getting rid of it) for a few months. It's a great lens. It's very sharp, has great color and bokeh. The build quality is fantastic.

But it struggles to AF in the dark. Most lenses struggle to focus is super low light, but the Sigma isn't as good as some of my Canon lenses. At 1.4, it can be hard to nail focus for things like close portraits, and for the first several weeks, I was getting missing focus a lot because I was using too slow shutter speeds.

But when the Sigma nails it, the images are some of my favorite. It's been on my camera most of the time I'm not doing a a specific job. I used it to photograph a church VBS in terrible light, and it did really well. (http://photography.bradschrum.com/blog (external link) -- many of these images are taken with the Sigma, but not all of them. Sorry I can't narrow it down right now).

The only reason I am selling it is because I'm getting a 5D.

If you a planning to take photos of people moving, I'd recommend the Sigma. There's a lot of light difference between f1.4 and f2, and image stabilization won't help if your subjects are moving. The focus can be tricky at times, but worth it.

For your camera I'd probably go with the Sigma. One stop can make a big difference on keeping those ISO values down, which in my experience anything above 3200ISO on that sensor is less than ideal. F1.4 also gives the perfect amount of isolation for candid full body shots at that FL on crop imo. I just took my X-E1 with only the 35/1.4 to Comicon and I left it at f1.4 most if the day, shots looked great and it kept my ISO below 3200. Of course IS is very useful for static subjects, but when it comes to shooting people it's pretty much a moot point.
