I'm still using the Ipad 2 I bought when they were announced 3 and 1/2 years ago. It still works, and I have seen no reason to upgrade. When Apple announces the retina Macbook Air I'll switch to it, I don't think I'll be waiting too much longer.

I'm still using a 2 as well and my school has 3's. I don't see much of a difference to be honest.

Be careful buying too old of an apple device. Once they cut you off from OS updates, its utility quickly declines as app makers very quickly require the latest OS to run. The ipad 2 is currently the oldest one that will run IOS 8. Next year might find it cut from the roster.

Also, consider looking at an Android device. When I went shopping the Apple store guy sold me a method of reading an SD card but I could never get it to reliably work. Ultimately I went with the Samsung Galaxy Note 10.1. The Samsung card reader works 100% of the time. Android is much better in terms of connectivity and storage since most also have a microSD card slot, in my case I have an addtional 64 Gig in a slot for storage and some but not all applications.

Get the newest you can afford. But remember alot of the latest IOs features dont wont on every generation of ipad, i.e., some features of ios7 dont work on a ipad 2. Investigate the ios version features also.

I have an ipad 3 a lot of the new apps require ios 7. I also had a ipad 2 and it was a huge difference in picture quality ,the 3 is retina display the 2 is not.
I have have an iphone also and use the apps on both devices which is nice but the not having a USB port sucks greatly.
I have a lot of time and money in apps and it' hard to pull the plug on Apple but if I was starting from scratch today I'd go android and give it a test drive .

still on an Ipad 2 as well and to be honest, I don't feel the need on upgrading yet.

it does what I need (browsing, quick image editing and sharing, remote access, video watching and occasional gaming)

I thought about buying one of the newer ones so that I only have one cable connector to worry about but not a high priority right now

I rolled with an iPad 2 64GB for quite a while, but once the Air came out I knew it was time to upgrade. I picked up an Air 64GB 4G and wow do I love it much more. The Air is much smaller and lighter and a bit quicker plus I finally got the Retina Display which is noticeably sharper.

I have the iPad 4th 64GB LTE and I find it a bit bulky and heavy comparing to the air.

Currently owned: Canon 7D with grip, 580EX II, 50mm 1.4, 16-35mm f/2.8L, 24-105mm f/4L, 70-200mm f/2.8L
Wanted to sell: Canon 7D with grip - 900$ <9k shutter counts, 24-105mm f/4L - 600$, 70-200mm f/2.8L - 1000$

If you're going to buy an iPad to view/show your images, the Retina Display is a must! (iPad 3 and higher all have retina displays.)

Also, it is widely expected that Apple will release a newer version of the iPad with a few months, so if you can wait, you can probably pick up the current model, an iPad Air, for the same price you'd pay for an iPad 3 today. Food for thought.

I use my iPad 4th Gen wifi tethered via Camranger. Great for previewing the shot with my clients, then quickly emailing them for preliminary approvals.
