Hi,

So it looks like this is gonna be announced soon:

Too bad it's efs, but paired with a SL1 would make a pretty stealth street photography setup with a popular 35ish mm equivalent field of view.

:)

too bad it's not F2 like the M pancake..... @F2, it would probably sell like hotcakes, at F2.8, it's kinda meh for efs.

If f/2.8 is the compromise they had to make for price and compactness, I'd take it. That extra stop would mean shallower DOF and better low light, but for me personally this is not the focal length where I'm expecting awesome amounts of bokeh anyways.

As for low-light, when compared to the EOS-M and 22mm, I'd have to say I can usually get away with slower shutter speeds on a DSLR as compared to when I had the EOS-M, I find the DSLR easier to stabilize and hold in a steady manner.

Of course, just my personal preferences, I'm pretty excited about this lens, it's the lens I wish they had when the released the SL1.

this lens is a lot less appealing than the 40 pancake for a few reasons. Croppers already have access to 17-5x lenses that are F2.8, smallish, and sharpish, and fairly inexpensive.

The eos-M pancake is a full stop faster. A 2.8 prime on crop is too much compromise..... it's already starved for light as is.

I think if the performance is similar to the ef-m 22mm then M owners who are looking for a viewfinder and better AF don't have any reason to not get the SL1 over the M other than size (and maybe total price) even if this lens is 2.8 versus 2 for the EF-M.

Agree to disagree. Unless the IQ is mediocre or the price comes in higher than $250, I don't see how this lens could be any less appealing than the 40 in any way. The 40 results in a seriously awkward 64mm FOV on a crop sensor, and is also f/2.8.

As for the zooms, they are still going to be pricier (I'm assuming) and quite larger/ heavier than this pancake lens.

Honestly, this lens is almost a must-have for the Canon SL1. It's something they should have released as a kit lens option, as they did with the EOS-M.

I do like the 16cm MFD - 0.27x magnification. I might buy it just for that reason.

Think new Canon lenses are overpriced? Lots (and lots) of data will set you free!

I own the 40.....and I think I will pick this up when it comes out. Shooting at 2.8 I don't think its "starved" for light if you are used to shooting at - say 3.5 / 4 ect.... This lens seems to be much better priced than picking up a used 17-55 2.8 and much more compact and gives the STM for video with my 70D ;)

Do we still not have a release date for this lens?
