What's the best way to combine multiple shots in PS to duplicate a multiple exposure shot in film camera? Is it really just a question of opacity?

You can use a luminosity mask, as detailed here: http://www.thelightsright.com/tutorials-video.htm (external link)

And another video, this time using a more manual approach: http://www.steve-perks.com …ts/mergeraw/mergeraw.html (external link)

Thanks for the links--those are great.

I'm guessing I didn't explain myself very well. Not so much looking at combining images to expand the dynamic range, but more for creative photos--taking multiple exposures of an image (eg flower), stacking the shots, then changing one variable, then blending to create a more abstract shot. Does this make sense? Is it possible?

In that case it is not just a function of opacity, but also blend mode. The Help files will give a detailed explanation of how each mode works. Experimentation will give you knowledge as to what works and where.
