Well, for the time being

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/technology-29175093 (external link)
and for those who can't go on the BBC for whatever reasons
http://www.theverge.com …-the-biggest-in-the-world (external link)

Coming in at a whopping 512Gb, mainly aimed to the 4K video shooters rather that still photographers, but....nothing is there to stop anyone buying it for themselves, lol

It's hard to imagine, but this size will be commonplace for the everyday user within the next 5-8 years!

But a large number of people do just that every day. Just that they manage to do it by not having a proper backup of their hard disks.

I believe so, especially if video advances to the point where we have 80 or 100 FPS, and every frame is a 30 megapixel raw file.

"Your" and "you're" are different words with completely different meanings - please use the correct one.
"They're", "their", and "there" are different words with completely different meanings - please use the correct one.
"Fare" and "fair" are different words with completely different meanings - please use the correct one. The proper expression is "moot point", NOT "mute point".

I see that the 512GB SDXC card will initially retail for a whopping $799. Having just put a 32GB card through the laundry a couple of weeks ago (without apparent damage), I don't think I could be trusted with an eight-hundred dollar card the size of a postage stamp. Too easy to leave one in a pocket, as I discovered too late.

Just think, that is a UHS speed class 1 card. Wonder what they will charge for the UHS speed class 3 card?

Reminds me of when I got my first laptop - I think it had something like 4GB and I was told reliably by the retailer that I'd NEVER use that much space up fully ever. (It might have been more - all I can recall is I had to uninstall almost everything extra to get Diablo 2 to install)

Thing is whilst the storage sizes go up so too do the save sizes. Photos are getting huge (esp in RAW) with higher and higher MP values and video is even bigger still. Computer games are also going the same way, 500mb was a rough commonish value when I started - now 20GB is not out of the question for a single game.

A card like this is insane today unless you're doing a lot of video or travelling long distance with power, but no download access (also a rarity in todays market). But I wouldn't be surprised if in half to a decade of time that we are starting to think of them as quite sane (I recall those 32GB cards being questioned as to the sanity of having that much storage space - today many of us already own or would like to own them).

All I can think of is that Darn if Nintendo get a hold of that tech we'll get some HUGE games on the DS! :)

Tools of the trade: Canon 400D, Canon 7D, Canon 70-200mm f2.8 IS L M2, Sigma 120-300mm f2.8 OS, Canon MPE 65mm f2.8 macro, Sigma 150mm f2.8 macro, Tamron 24-70mm f2.4, Sigma 70mm f2.8 macro, Sigma 8-16mm f4.5-5.6, Raynox DCR 250, loads of teleconverters and a flashy thingy too

Sounds cool, but I'd rather have multiple smaller cards than one $800 card that is easy to lose, or heaven forbid, goes corrupt.

Yeah, back in "the day", IBM PCs and all that jazz, except my first hard drive was I think 10MB, and of course what was the RAM in those old machines, 640K max?
