this time of year (early fall). Have a weekend to take a short trip coming up. Most places around here haven't had many birds at all lately. Would hope to see some migrants at some spot.

I am not sure what you will find at this time of year but this is my favorite in the spring http://floridabirdingtrail.com …Viera_aka_Viera_Wetlands/ (external link)

If you Google Viera wetlands there are a lot of sights on it.

I'd be real interested in any opinions about the places listed below in central Florida for bird photography. These places are all relatively less known, I think. They are roughly between Winter Haven and Ft Pierce.

  • Lake Kissimmee State Park
  • Joe Overstreet Landing
  • Prairie Lakes Unit, Three Lakes Wildlife Management Area
  • Fort Drum Wildlife Management Area
  • Kissimmee Prairie Preserve
  • Hickory Hammock

If I've overlooked a good location in this area, I would appreciate knowing about it.

I already know about many if not most of the places in the Everglades and along the Atlantic and Gulf.

Not familiar with any of the spots but have you checked ebird hotspots to see what is going on at those locations over the past few years?

Thanks for the suggestion. I just went there and had a look. It is quite an amazing site reporting the prevalence of a species for a year. Is there a way of getting info on specific locations?

Thanks, CaptBob. Tickets are bought. Will definitely be there.

I'm actually a regular snowbird and usually spend 2 weeks in Fla each January. My favorite spots include the Anhinga Trail, Shark Valley, Tavernier Bird Rescue place, Little Estero, Merritt Is. and the places around Delay Beach. Haven't had much luck comparatively at Ding Darling or Corkscrew although they are pleasant places to visit. I'm always interested in new & exciting places.

Florida is a birder's paradise.

Yes go to explore data and open hotspots. Then select major hotspots. Or if you know county put in explore a region and will show info for county. Down the right side will list hotspots. Hope this helps

OK, thanks. Under Explore Hotspots, I noted that downtown Miami is a hotspot. I also found the "Top hotspots by species" for Florida. A list of 10 places was given. No indication of where these places are, so I had to enter them one by one into Google Maps. Many are in N Fla where I won't be. It's not easy to find birding hotspots! Anyway, I noticed Bill Baggs Cape SP on Key Biscayne, and that might have potential.

After expanding the Top hotspots list, I checked out those places in central Florida north of Lake Okeechobee that I had asked about in post #6:

Lake Kissimmee SP - 188 species
Joe Overstreet Landing - not mentioned
Prairie Lakes Unit, Three Lakes WMA - not mentioned
Fort Drum WMA - not mentioned
Kissimmee Prairie Preserve - not mentioned
Hickory Hammock - not mentioned

So, mostly duds.

A species count doesn't actually tell much about opportunities for bird photography. At least at L Kissimmee there are birds. But 188 species does not rank very high on the list (it was 89 out of a list of 100).

If you find yourself near Gainesville, the La Chua trail part of Paynes Prairie is a great place for birding.

From your posts, I don't think you'll be that far north or west, but just in case.
